Yes, Porto is an easy river-cruise stop for our scavenger hunt. Most Douro ships moor at the Vila Nova de Gaia quays opposite Ribeira; Scenic and Emerald use their own dock on the Porto bank. The hunt starts at Praça da Liberdade, about 25 minutes on foot over the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge, or quicker by cable car and metro. It takes about 2 hours and ends at the bridge, right by the boats.

Price range: 4.99 € through 19.99 €From the Gaia quays to Praça da Liberdade
- From the Gaia quays, walk along the riverside to the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge and cross to Ribeira on the Porto bank.
- From Ribeira, walk uphill past São Bento station to Praça da Liberdade, at the southern end of Avenida dos Aliados. The whole walk is about 1.3 km and takes about 25 minutes, with a steep climb; from the Scenic and Emerald dock by Ribeira it is about 20 minutes.
- To skip the climb, take the Gaia Cable Car from Cais de Gaia up to Jardim do Morro, then metro line D (Yellow) one stop across the upper deck of the bridge to São Bento, a couple of minutes' walk from the square.
- If your ship moors further out, for example at Quebrantões under the São João railway bridge, take a taxi to Praça da Liberdade: about 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Tips for Porto when time is short
- Porto is very hilly: the climb from Ribeira to Praça da Liberdade is steep, so use the cable car and metro line D if you want to save your legs for the hunt.
- The hunt ends at the Luís I bridge, right by the river, so the walk back to ships moored in Gaia or by Ribeira is short.
- Check your ship's berth before setting out: some lines moor outside the centre, for example at Quebrantões under the São João bridge.
- Metro line D runs about every 5-6 minutes on weekdays and about every 10 minutes in the evening and at weekends.
- Douro cruises usually begin or end in Porto, so the day you board or leave the ship can also leave time for the 2-hour game.
- On an ocean cruise you arrive at Leixões, about 8 km from the centre; allow about 30 minutes each way by metro from Matosinhos Sul.
Why a self-guided game works on a port day
- You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
- Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
- You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
- Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.
Porto river cruise stop: questions
Where do Douro river cruise ships dock in Porto?
Most moor on the Vila Nova de Gaia bank opposite Ribeira. Scenic and Emerald have their own dock on the Porto side by Ribeira, and some lines, such as CroisiEurope at Quebrantões, dock further upstream.
Can I walk from the Gaia quays to Porto's old town?
Yes, across the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge to Ribeira. Continuing up to Praça da Liberdade is steep and takes about 25 minutes in total.
Is there an easy way up the hill?
Yes. The Gaia Cable Car runs from Cais de Gaia up to Jardim do Morro, where metro line D crosses the upper deck of the bridge to São Bento, close to Praça da Liberdade.
Where do ocean cruise ships dock for Porto?
At the Port of Leixões in Matosinhos, about 8 km from the centre; the metro takes about 30 minutes.
Which sights does the hunt pass?
Among others the Igreja dos Clérigos, Livraria Lello, the Bolsa Palace, Ribeira Square and Porto Cathedral, before it ends at the Luís I bridge. No entry tickets are needed: the stops are seen from outside.
Do I need to book a time slot?
No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.
What do we need on the day?
A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
Port and transport details checked in November 2026. Docking positions and timetables change, so always check your ship’s all-aboard time and your cruise line’s port information before you set off.
