Rotterdam on a cruise stop: a self-guided city game from the port

Yes, Rotterdam is an easy cruise stop for our game. Ocean ships berth alongside at Cruise Terminal Rotterdam on the Wilhelminakade, beside the Erasmus Bridge. The hunt starts at the Stadhuis (City Hall) on the Coolsingel: about 25-30 minutes on foot over the bridge, or 10-15 minutes by metro from Wilhelminaplein. The hunt takes about 2 hours and finishes at the Wereldmuseum, a short walk back over the bridge. It fits comfortably into a normal port day.

From the Wilhelminakade to the Stadhuis

  1. Walk from the terminal over the Erasmus Bridge into the centre and on to the Stadhuis on the Coolsingel. The centre is about 1.5-2 km away and the walk takes about 25-30 minutes on flat ground.
  2. Or take the RET metro: Wilhelminaplein station is a short walk from the terminal. Ride line D or E (direction Rotterdam Centraal or Den Haag Centraal) three stops to Stadhuis, right under the Coolsingel, about 10-15 minutes in all. Tap in and out with a contactless bank card.
  3. Taxis wait outside the terminal; the 2-3 km ride over the Erasmus Bridge takes about 5-10 minutes, useful if someone in your group prefers not to walk far.
  4. On a river cruise? Ask the crew how far your mooring is from the Coolsingel, then walk or take the metro or tram to Stadhuis and start the game there.

Tips for Rotterdam when time is short

  • The city is flat and very walkable; the Erasmus Bridge is the main link between the terminal and the centre and a sight in itself.
  • Metro, tram and buses accept contactless bank cards: check in and check out with the same card.
  • Trams 20, 23 and 25 also stop at Wilhelminaplein near the terminal, handy if you want to ride part of the way back.
  • The hunt ends at the Wereldmuseum close to the Erasmus Bridge, so the walk back to the ship is short.
  • Planning a longer day? Rotterdam Centraal, about 15-20 minutes from the port by metro or taxi, has fast trains to Amsterdam and The Hague.
  • Your ticket has no time limit, so you can pause for a coffee or lunch and continue whenever you like.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Rotterdam cruise stop: questions

Can I walk from the Rotterdam cruise terminal to the city centre?

Yes. The terminal is on the Wilhelminakade beside the Erasmus Bridge, and the centre is about 1.5-2 km away across the bridge, roughly a 20-30 minute walk.

What is the nearest metro station to the cruise terminal?

Wilhelminaplein, a short walk away, served by metro lines D and E; Stadhuis station on the Coolsingel is three stops north.

Do cruise ships tender in Rotterdam?

No. Ocean ships berth alongside at Cruise Terminal Rotterdam on the Wilhelminakade.

How do I pay for public transport in Rotterdam?

Tap in and out with a contactless bank card on RET metro, trams and buses; remember to check out as well as in.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.
