Yes, Split is among the easiest cruise stops for our game. Most ships berth in the city harbour, either at the inner berths near the ferry terminal or on the outer breakwater; on busy days some tender. The hunt starts at the Croatian National Theatre just north of Diocletian's Palace: about 15 minutes on foot from the inner berths and 25 minutes from the outer ones. It takes about 2 hours and ends on the Riva near the port: easy on a normal port day.

Price range: 4.99 € through 19.99 €From the Split cruise berths to the National Theatre
- Find out where your ship is. Smaller and mid-size ships use the inner berths near the ferry terminal; larger ships use the outer breakwater berths, the furthest from the old town. On busy days some ships anchor and tender passengers to a landing close to the old town.
- Walk along the flat waterfront to the Riva; a painted blue line leads past the bus station. That takes about 5-10 minutes from the inner berths and about 15-20 minutes from the outer breakwater.
- Pass through Diocletian's Palace to the Golden Gate on its north side and continue a few minutes to the Croatian National Theatre on Trg Gaje Bulata. In all, about 15 minutes from the inner berths and about 25 minutes from the outer ones.
- There is a taxi rank on the pier, about 5-10 minutes to town, but it is only worth it from the outer berths or for people who cannot walk far, as the old town is mostly pedestrian.
A Split port day, hour by hour
- 0:00Off the ship and along the waterfront towards the Riva, following the blue line.
- 0:25At the Croatian National Theatre: open the app and start the hunt, with Grgur Ninski and the Golden Gate first.
- 1:25Around halfway: inside Diocletian's Palace at Peristil, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and Jupiter's Temple.
- 2:25Finish at the Prokurative after People's Square and the Riva. Time for a drink on the waterfront.
- 2:50Short walk back along the Riva to your berth, with at least an hour in hand before all-aboard time.
Tips for Split when time is short
- Diocletian's Palace is busiest roughly 10:00-14:00 when several ships are in; the route still works, but expect slower going in the narrow lanes around Peristil.
- The walk from the ship is flat and paved but has little shade, so carry water in July and August.
- Old-town streets are polished stone and can be slippery: wear shoes with good grip.
- If your ship tenders, the landing is closer to the old town than the outer berths, which saves you time.
- Ask at the gangway whether your ship runs a shuttle from the outer breakwater berths.
- All-aboard is usually 30-60 minutes before departure; leave a buffer for the walk back to the outer berths.
Why a self-guided game works on a port day
- You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
- Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
- You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
- Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.
Split cruise stop: questions
Is the old town of Split walkable from the cruise port?
Yes. Diocletian's Palace is about 5-10 minutes on foot from the inner berths and about 15-20 minutes from the outer breakwater berths, on a flat waterfront route.
Do cruise ships tender or dock in Split?
Most ships berth alongside, but Split also has an anchorage, and some ships tender passengers ashore on busy days; the tender landing is close to the old town.
When is Diocletian's Palace busiest?
Roughly from 10:00 to 14:00, when cruise passengers and tour groups overlap. Starting early, or after lunch, makes the lanes easier.
Where does the hunt end, and how far is it from the ship?
At the Prokurative square at the west end of the Riva, a short walk back along the waterfront to the port.
Do I need to book a time slot?
No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.
What do we need on the day?
A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
