Tallinn on a cruise stop: a self-guided city game from the port

Yes, our Tallinn scavenger hunt is easy to fit into a cruise stop. Almost all ocean ships dock at the Old City Harbour (Vanasadam), whose cruise terminal is about 1 km from the Old Town. Most people walk to the start at the Viru Gate; a taxi takes about 5 minutes. The hunt takes about 2 hours over 2.6 km and ends at the Estonian Maritime Museum in the Fat Margaret tower, the Old Town gate closest to the harbour.

From the Old City Harbour to the Viru Gate

  1. Before you set off, use the toilets in the cruise terminal and pick up a free map at the information stand. The terminal also has Wi-Fi.
  2. Walk from the terminal towards the Old Town, about 1 km, then follow its eastern edge to the Viru Gate at the end of Viru street. This is where the hunt starts.
  3. If your ship sells a shuttle to the city centre (tickets on board or at the pier), the ride takes about 5–10 minutes; ask where it drops off and walk on to the Viru Gate.
  4. Contracted taxis (Tallink, Tulika) wait at the terminal doors, and ride-hailing cars such as Bolt or Uber pick up at the Kiss&Sail lots near Terminals A and D. The ride takes about 5 minutes.

Tips for Tallinn when time is short

  • The Old Town is cobbled and the upper town, Toompea, sits on a hill: wear comfortable shoes.
  • On days with several ships, the Old Town lanes get crowded around midday; going straight to the start helps.
  • The finish at Fat Margaret is the Old Town gate nearest the port, so the walk back to the ship is short.
  • The roof of the cruise terminal is an 850 m public promenade linking to the seafront, a pleasant way to start or end the day.
  • If your ship uses Muuga Harbour instead, allow for a 17 km transfer each way by ship shuttle or taxi.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Tallinn cruise stop: questions

Can you walk from the Tallinn cruise port to the Old Town?

Yes. Cruise ships dock at the Old City Harbour, about 1 km from the Old Town, and most people walk.

Are there toilets at the Tallinn cruise terminal?

Yes. The cruise terminal at the Old City Harbour has toilets, Wi-Fi and an information desk.

Is Tallinn Old Town hilly?

Partly. The lower town is fairly level, but Toompea, the upper town with the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, sits on a hill reached by cobbled streets.

Can I see Tallinn in one day from a cruise ship?

Yes. The hunt covers the lower town and Toompea in about 2 hours, starting and ending a short walk from the terminal, which leaves time for lunch or a museum.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
