Ten riddles inside Tallinn's medieval walls

The Tallinn scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk through the medieval Old Town, solve a riddle at each of 10 landmarks by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind them. From Viru Gate to Fat Margaret the walking itself adds up to only 38 minutes, over 2.6 km and 10 stops, and with the riddles and stories in between the game fills about 2 hours, beginning whenever you open it.

Highlights include Viru Gate, the Gothic Town Hall, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral on Toompea hill, the House of the Blackheads and Pikk Street. Tallinn's Old Town is compact and best explored on foot, with cobbled lanes, merchant houses and stretches of the medieval city wall between the stops.

What you do between the towers of the Old Town

Gargoyles, a weathervane and a Moor above the door

Each stop hides one riddle in what stands in front of you: the dragon-head gargoyles on the Town Hall, Old Thomas on top of its tower, the Moor above the painted doors of the House of the Blackheads. You solve everything by looking closely and thinking it through, with no Estonian required.

Friars, merchants and a novelist

A solved riddle unlocks the story behind the place: the Dominican friars who settled by the city wall by 1246, the Brotherhood of Blackheads and its patron Saint Maurice, and Eduard Vilde, remembered in white stone beside St Nicholas' Church. Prefer to listen? The audio narration reads each story aloud on the way up Toompea.

Up Toompea, down Pikk

Just 38 minutes of the game are spent walking, over 2.6 km: through the Lower Town, out to Freedom Square, up Toompea hill to the cathedral and back down to the long merchant street. Between the stops you follow Google Maps, and the only real effort is the brief climb up to Toompea.

A coffee on Town Hall Square when you feel like it

No clock is running, so sit down on Town Hall Square or in a café along Pikk whenever you want and carry on later that day or on another one. The two round towers of Viru Gate, at the end of Viru Street, make an easy place to meet before the first riddle.

In about 2 hours you see the gate, the Gothic Town Hall, Toompea and the merchant street, and the game ends at Fat Margaret, the tower built to guard the harbour, which is handy if you came in by sea. It fits just as well into a first afternoon in Tallinn.

Dragon spotters and tower counters

Kids can spot the dragon heads on the Town Hall, the old guard on the weathervane and a cannon tower with walls up to 5 metres thick. The route is short, an adult plays in every team, and the hill up to the cathedral is the only steep part.

Teams that meet again at the sea gate

Teams of up to 5, every player on a separate phone, can set off from the two towers of Viru Gate in waves a few minutes apart. Everything happens in public streets, and Fat Margaret at the far end of Pikk is an obvious spot to compare answers.

  • Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
  • Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
  • Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.

The hunt starts at Viru Gate and leads past St Catherine's Dominican Monastery to Tallinn Town Hall. From there you walk via the Eduard Vilde Memorial to Freedom Square and climb Toompea hill to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, then head down to the Great Guild Hall and the House of the Blackheads and follow Pikk, the Old Town's long merchant street. You finish at the Estonian Maritime Museum in the Fat Margaret tower. Every riddle is read off façades, gates and towers from the street, so you never queue at a ticket desk, and if you arrive from the harbour you can open the game at Fat Margaret and let the app turn the route around or reorder it.

    Tallinn Town Hall on Town Hall Square was completed in 1404 and is described as the last surviving Gothic town hall in Northern Europe. Look for the dragon-head gargoyles on the façade and for Old Thomas, the city guard weathervane on the tower; the first one was put up in 1530.

    Eduard Vilde (1865–1933) was one of Estonia's leading writers, known for historical novels such as The War in Mahtra. His memorial on Harju Street, beside St Nicholas' Church, is made of two large white stone tablets, one carved with figures of people and the other with a relief of the writer's head.

    My scavenger hunt self guided tour was amazing. It was on my pace, I was able to breaks and stop for food. I was able to take a lot of pics and spent a longer time at certain locations throughout my hunt. It gave nice clues and I was able to skip the riddle if I didn’t know the answers. It took me between 2-3 to complete it. I would recommend this to others.

    This activity is a great choice if you want to explore the city and see some of the most important sights without having to plan the whole tour of the city. We strolled though Tallinn and solved the riddles. They weren’t too difficult but were still wuite fun to interact with. The whole scavenger hunt took about 2 hours and we cocered most of the inner city. We particularly liked the legeds and gost stories that were shared between the riddles because these stories were unique and really interesting. There is some walking involved, so be prepared to take a long walk through the town.

Is it true the Tallinn game starts at a gate and ends at a tower?

The first riddle waits at Viru Gate, the two round towers at the end of Viru Street. If you are staying up on Toompea or near the harbour, the app lets you open the game at another stop.

Does someone meet us at Viru Gate at a fixed hour?

Nobody meets you there, and no hour is fixed. Tickets are booked online, one per player, and the booking reference comes by email; once it is entered in the World City Trail app, the game starts when you decide, in the morning or the evening. Every member of the team sees the riddles about gates, guilds and towers on their own phone.

Does anything between the Town Hall and Fat Margaret charge admission?

No: the Town Hall, the cathedral and the guild hall feature only from the outside, so your hunt ticket covers everything the game asks of you. The Estonian History Museum in the Great Guild Hall and the Estonian Maritime Museum in Fat Margaret are paid visits, which you can add during a pause or on another day.

Will children enjoy the hunt through Tallinn?

Most do, with an adult in the team: there are dragon-head gargoyles to find on the Town Hall, Old Thomas keeping watch from its tower, a Moor above a painted door and the eleven bells of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of them weighing about 16 tonnes. Cobbles and the climb up Toompea make it hard going with a pushchair, and the route is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Can we run the game as a team event in Tallinn?

Yes. Book one ticket per person, split into teams of up to five and send them off from Viru Gate at short intervals, then gather at Fat Margaret to see who solved what. From the Lower Town lanes to the top of Toompea it is all public ground, so beyond the tickets there is no room or time slot to arrange.

What should we bring for a walk on Tallinn's cobbles?

Shoes with a good grip for the cobblestones and the slope up to Toompea, and a warm, windproof layer, as the wind off the Baltic can be cool even in summer. Above all, each team needs a charged phone with mobile data, plus a power bank if you are planning a long day.
