Tenerife on a cruise stop: a self-guided city game from the port

Yes, our Tenerife scavenger hunt fits a normal cruise call in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Ships berth either close to the city, about 1 km from the centre, or at the South Pier (Muelle Sur), 1.5–2 km out. The start at Parque García Sanabria is about 35–45 minutes on foot or about 10 minutes by taxi. The hunt takes about 3 hours and ends at Plaza de España, right opposite the port, so the walk back is short.

From the Santa Cruz cruise port to Parque García Sanabria

  1. Check your berth first: the berths near the city are about a 15-minute walk from Plaza de España, while the South Pier (Muelle Sur) is noticeably farther, about 25–30 minutes on foot.
  2. Taxi: metered taxis usually wait at the piers. Ask for Parque García Sanabria; the ride takes about 10 minutes and saves the uphill walk.
  3. Walk: head to Plaza de España, the main square opposite the port, then go up through the shopping streets via Plaza Weyler to Parque García Sanabria. Allow about 35–45 minutes, longer from Muelle Sur.
  4. Shuttle: when a port shuttle runs (mainly from Muelle Sur), it drops you at Plaza de España after a few minutes; from there it is about 25 minutes on foot to the park.

Tips for Tenerife when time is short

  • The hunt finishes at Plaza de España, just across from the cruise port, so the walk back to the ship is short and you can spend any spare time in the centre.
  • The centre is mostly flat and easy to walk; only the way up to Parque García Sanabria rises gently, which is why a taxi to the start makes sense.
  • If your ship is at Muelle Sur, add time for the longer walk or use the shuttle when one is provided.
  • Restrooms are available at Parque García Sanabria and at Plaza Weyler, and there is one along the pier towards town.
  • Shuttles and taxis can be in short supply when several ships are in, so keep a margin on the way back.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Tenerife cruise stop: questions

Can I walk from the Santa Cruz de Tenerife cruise terminal into town?

Yes. From the berths near the city it is about 15–20 minutes on foot to Plaza de España; from Muelle Sur allow 25–30 minutes or use the shuttle when provided.

Is there a shuttle bus from the cruise ship?

Sometimes, mainly from Muelle Sur. It drops passengers near Plaza de España in the centre.

Is Santa Cruz de Tenerife hilly?

The centre is largely flat and easy to walk; the streets towards Parque García Sanabria rise gently.

Are there toilets along the route?

Yes. There are restrooms at Parque García Sanabria, where the hunt starts, and at Plaza Weyler, plus one along the pier towards town.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
