Fun facts about Krakow

Kraków was Poland's royal capital for more than 500 years, and it still feels like it. Its Old Town came through the Second World War largely intact, so the square, the churches and the castle you see today are the real thing, not reconstructions. Here are the facts and stories that make the city special.

  • A trumpet call that stops mid-note: every hour, a trumpeter plays the hejnał from the taller tower of St Mary's Basilica, four times, once towards each side of the world. The melody breaks off abruptly, in memory of a watchman who, the legend says, was shot by an arrow while sounding the alarm.
  • Two towers, two brothers: the towers of St Mary's are not the same height. Legend says two brothers each built one, and the elder, jealous of the younger's taller tower, killed him. A knife said to be the one he used still hangs in the passage of the Cloth Hall.
  • One of Europe's largest medieval squares: the Main Market Square covers about 4 hectares. It was laid out in 1257, when Kraków received its town charter, and its plan has hardly changed since.
  • A dragon that breathes real fire: at the foot of Wawel Hill stands a bronze dragon by the sculptor Bronisław Chromy, in place since 1972. It breathes fire every few minutes, next to the exit of the Dragon's Den cave.
  • One of the oldest universities in Central Europe: the Jagiellonian University was founded in 1364. Nicolaus Copernicus studied here in the 1490s, and his statue stands on the Planty park, next to the university's Collegium Novum.
  • Among the very first World Heritage Sites: the historic centre of Kraków, including Wawel and Kazimierz, was on UNESCO's first World Heritage List in 1978.
  • An altar carved by hand over twelve years: the high altar of St Mary's, by the sculptor Veit Stoss, was made between 1477 and 1489 and is one of the largest Gothic altarpieces in Europe.

Kraków's best-known story is about a dragon that lived in a cave under Wawel Hill and ate the townspeople's sheep. A young shoemaker, often called Skuba, stuffed a sheepskin with sulphur and left it outside the cave. The dragon swallowed it, felt its stomach burning and drank from the Vistula until it burst. From spring to autumn you can walk through the cave, the Dragon's Den, from Wawel Hill down to the river.

Kazimierz was founded in 1335 by King Casimir the Great as a separate town next to Kraków. For more than four centuries it was one of the great centres of Jewish life in Europe, and several of its synagogues still stand. During the Second World War the Jewish ghetto was not in Kazimierz but across the river in Podgórze. Steven Spielberg filmed much of Schindler's List in Kazimierz in 1993, and today the district is known for its cafés, galleries and food stalls.
