The route: from the Denkmal to the Hallstatt viewpoint
The Hallstatt scavenger hunt starts at the Denkmal (monument), passes the World War memorial and the Johann Georg Ramsauer memorial, then reaches the World Heritage Museum and the Marktplatz. After the Talherberge you visit the Protestant church on the lakeshore, climb to the Catholic parish church and its Charnel House, and finish at a viewpoint over the village.
The 10 stops cover only about 1.3 km, roughly 21 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Hallstatt with a city game
Hallstatt sits on a narrow strip between Lake Hallstatt and steep mountainsides, so its lanes, stairways and wooden houses are best explored on foot. Salt has been mined here for thousands of years, the village gave its name to the early Iron Age Hallstatt culture, and it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Charnel House holds hundreds of painted skulls.
A game makes you slow down and notice inscriptions and façades most day visitors walk past, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule, and you can pause by the water whenever you like.
- Come early in the morning or in the late afternoon: Hallstatt is small and gets very crowded with day visitors around midday.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details outdoors.
- Wear comfortable shoes: steep steps lead up to the Catholic parish church and the Charnel House.
- Combine the game with a visit inside the World Heritage Museum or a coffee by the lake at the Marktplatz.
