The route: from Cologne Cathedral to the Chocolate Museum
The Cologne scavenger hunt starts at Cologne Cathedral and continues via the Heinzelmännchen Fountain to the Alter Markt and the carillon of the Town Hall tower, then to the statues of Tünnes and Schäl and Great St Martin Church. You then pass the Fishwives’ Fountain, cross the Heumarkt, head down to the Pegelturm on the Rhine and finish at the Chocolate Museum.
The 10 stops are close together: about 2 km, roughly 20 minutes of walking. You can start elsewhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Cologne with a city game
Cologne’s old town is compact and full of stories. The Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site begun in 1248 and finished in 1880, holds the Shrine of the Three Kings. The Heinzelmännchen Fountain tells the legend of the little house spirits who did the city’s work at night, the Romanesque tower of Great St Martin rises over the colourful houses of the Fischmarkt, and the statues of Tünnes and Schäl stand for the city’s famous humour.
A game makes you look closely at figures and façades you would otherwise pass, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for a Kölsch whenever you like.
- Start in the morning: the cathedral square and the Alter Markt get busy from late morning, especially at weekends.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on façade details.
- Bring a charged phone and a power bank; the route is short, so it is easy with children.
- Visit the Chocolate Museum at the finish, or end with a Kölsch in a traditional old town brewhouse.
