The route: from the Alte Oper to the Old Bridge

The Frankfurt scavenger hunt starts at the Alte Oper and leads past the Goethe Monument to the Goethe House and St. Paul’s Church before reaching the Römerberg. From the Stadthaus am Markt you continue to Frankfurt Cathedral and the Historical Museum, then cross to the riverside via the Iron Footbridge and finish at the Old Bridge over the Main.

The route covers about 2 km, roughly 24 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Frankfurt with a city game

Behind Frankfurt’s skyline lies a compact historic centre. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in the Goethe House in 1749, St. Paul’s Church hosted Germany’s first freely elected national assembly in 1848, and Holy Roman emperors were elected and later crowned in the cathedral. The half-timbered houses on the Römerberg face the Römer, the city hall for centuries.

A game makes you look closely at inscriptions, statues and façades you would otherwise miss, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for a coffee or a glass of apple wine whenever you like.

  • Start in the morning or late afternoon; the Römerberg is busiest around midday and during the Christmas market.
  • Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on façade details.
  • Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes.
  • From the Old Bridge it is a short walk to Sachsenhausen, known for its apple wine taverns, or to the museums along the riverbank.
