The route: from the Burgtor to Lübeck Cathedral
The Lübeck scavenger hunt starts at the Burgtor, the old northern city gate, and leads to the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, Theater Lübeck and the Buddenbrookhaus. After St Mary’s Church and the Town Hall you walk out to the Holstentor, then back via St Peter’s Church and the St Annen Museum Quarter to Lübeck Cathedral.
The 10 stops cover about 3.4 km, roughly 44 minutes of walking. You can start elsewhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Lübeck with a city game
Lübeck was the leading city of the Hanseatic League, and its old town island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still shows that wealth. St Mary’s Church became a model for Brick Gothic churches around the Baltic, the Holstentor guards the western entrance, and the Buddenbrookhaus recalls Thomas Mann’s famous novel. The Cathedral was founded in 1173 by Henry the Lion.
A game makes you look closely at gables, brickwork and inscriptions you would otherwise pass by, and the stories that follow explain what you have just seen. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for marzipan whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon, when the Holstentor and the old town lanes are quieter.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details on the outside of the buildings.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes; many old town streets are cobbled.
- Take in the view from the tower of St Peter’s Church, or try Lübeck marzipan near the Town Hall.
