Why explore Bolzano with a city game
Bolzano is a bilingual city where Italian and German meet, with the Dolomites on the horizon. The cathedral’s colourful tiled roof rises beside Piazza Walther, named after the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide, and Via dei Portici has been the town’s arcaded trading street since the Middle Ages. The archaeology museum is home to Ötzi, the Iceman who lived about 5,300 years ago.
A game makes you look closely at arcades, painted façades and monuments you would otherwise miss, and the stories explain what you see. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule and time for apple strudel whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon; the arcades and Piazza delle Erbe are busiest around midday.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details of façades and monuments.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes.
- Combine the game with a visit to Ötzi inside the archaeology museum, or in December with the Christmas market on Piazza Walther.
