Why explore Parma with a city game
Parma is a compact, elegant city shaped by the Farnese dukes, whose vast Pilotta palace still faces the river. Giuseppe Verdi was born in the province, and the Teatro Regio is one of Italy’s best-known opera houses. The octagonal Baptistery is clad in pink Verona marble, and inside the cathedral dome is Correggio’s fresco of the Assumption.
A game makes you look closely at carvings, statues and façades you would otherwise pass by, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for Parma ham and Parmigiano whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon; the light on the pink Baptistery is lovely late in the day.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details of the façades.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes; the route is short and flat, easy for families.
- Finish with a visit inside the cathedral or the Baptistery, or an aperitivo with local cured meats nearby.
