Why explore Braga with a city game
Braga was founded by the Romans as Bracara Augusta and has been a seat of archbishops for centuries, which is why churches seem to stand on every corner. Its cathedral is one of the oldest in Portugal, and the 18th century added a rich layer of Baroque: granite façades, the Arco da Porta Nova and the blue-tiled Palácio do Raio.
A game makes you look closely at coats of arms, tiles and carvings you would otherwise pass by, and the stories that follow explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for a coffee at A Brasileira whenever you like.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon; the pedestrian streets near the cathedral are busiest at lunchtime and on weekends.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details in granite and tiles.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes for the stone-paved streets.
- Leave time for Bom Jesus do Monte, the hilltop sanctuary just outside the city.
