See the guide in action

A short look at a real guide: ticking places off, filtering and opening Maps.

The Bayeux City Guides deal with the questions every visit here raises: which landing beaches belong together in one day so you are not seeing Normandy through a windscreen, where Norman cooking is actually cooked rather than defrosted for tour groups, how to reach the American Cemetery before it shuts, and what to do while the Tapestry is away in London until 2027. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place is worth it, what to order or look for and one useful tip, and it opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

The three Bayeux guides

Food guide

20 places

Norman cooking and crêpes in Bayeux, three dinners worth booking ahead, oysters, scallops and fish along the landing coast from Courseulles to Grandcamp-Maisy, then the market, dairies, a cider farm and a cake shop.

Things to do guide

21 places

The cathedral, museums and war cemetery in Bayeux, a Mansart château in the countryside, then the D-Day sites sector by sector: Gold and Omaha, Utah and the airborne villages, Juno, Pegasus Bridge and Caen.

Day trips guide

20 places

The nearest landing beaches at Gold and Omaha, then Juno, Pegasus Bridge and Utah, and for a break from war history, Normandy’s harbours, abbeys and villages as far as Mont-Saint-Michel.

Three places from the guides

Le Moulin de la Galette

Rue de Nesmond, by the river Aure

Galettes and crêpes in a former watermill, with a terrace under a big tree right on the water, a few minutes’ walk out of the centre. Buckwheat galettes cost about €10 to €15, the Bayeux cider comes on draught, and French families keep every table busy. From the food guide.

Longues-sur-Mer battery

Longues-sur-Mer, 15 min north of Bayeux

Four concrete casemates in a field above the cliffs, and the only coastal battery in Normandy whose 150 mm guns are still in place, two of them marked by shellfire. You can walk right inside, and it costs nothing. From the things to do guide.

Juno Beach Centre

Courseulles-sur-Mer, 30 min by car or Nomad bus 74

Canada’s museum on the beach its soldiers landed on, with young Canadian guides on the staff. It tells the whole war from the Canadian side, not only 6 June. Entry is about €14, and the guided walk through the German bunkers on the sand costs a little more and earns it. From the beaches and day trips guide.

Plan your days in Bayeux

Day one: stay in Bayeux. Start with the cathedral, then visit the Battle of Normandy museum and the MAHB on one combined ticket and walk the rows of the Commonwealth war cemetery. Have a set lunch a street away from the busiest stretch of Rue Saint-Jean, spend a slow hour under the weeping beech in the botanic garden and finish with a booked dinner at La Rapière. Day two: drive the central beaches in one direction only. See the Mulberry harbour at Arromanches in the morning, then the original guns at Longues-sur-Mer, reach the American Cemetery at Colleville in the early afternoon, since it closes at 17:00, and end on the cratered cliff of Pointe du Hoc, with fish at Port-en-Bessin on the way back. For a rainy or slow day, take the train to Caen for half a day in the Mémorial de Caen, or drive out to Balleroy castle, then eat galettes by the river at Le Moulin de la Galette.
