The Meteora City Guides answer what every visitor here ends up asking: which monastery is shut on which day, how to reach the rocks on foot rather than by coach, where to eat slow-cooked lamb or a cheap gyros once you are back down, and which viewpoints and stairways work with children. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place is worth the effort, what to see or order and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

Three places from the guides
Taverna Gardenia
Kastraki, Agiou Athanasiou (village centre)
Kastraki’s best-loved taverna, with tables facing the village church and the cliffs behind it. Order the moussaka or the house salad, and expect honey cake and a glass of grappa on the house at the end. From the food guide.
Monastery of the Holy Trinity
Meteora, east side, footpath up from Kalambaka
Known from the Bond film For Your Eyes Only, it stands alone on its own pillar. You drop into a gully, then climb some 140 steps cut into the stone, and behind the church you may walk out onto the bare summit, which no other monastery allows. From the things to do guide.
Arched Bridge of Portaikos River at Pyli
Pyli, 30 min by bus from Trikala
Saint Vissarion had this tall single stone arch built in 1514 over a clear mountain river. It costs nothing and never closes, with paths along the water and a café on the bank. From the monasteries and day trips guide.
Plan your days in Meteora
Day one: set off early from Kastraki on the old footpath up to St Nicholas Anapafsas and the Great Meteoron before the coaches roll in, carry on to Rousanou and the Main Observation Deck, then come down for dinner on a taverna terrace in Kastraki. Day two: climb from Kalambaka’s old town, past the Byzantine church of the Dormition, to the Holy Trinity, finish at St Stephen with its level bridge and spend the evening over tsipouro and meze in Kalambaka. For a rainy or slow day, mix the Natural History and Mushroom Museum and Theopetra Cave with a KTEL bus to Trikala for its castle, the Kursum Mosque and the Tsitsanis Museum. Check the closing days first: each monastery shuts on a different weekday.
