Ten riddles on the hill of Montmartre

The Montmartre scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you explore the hill of Montmartre, solve a riddle at each of 10 stops and unlock the stories behind them. Montmartre is a small hill, so the stops are close together: about 22 minutes on foot over 1.6 km, and the rest of the roughly 2 hours goes on riddles, stories, views over Paris and a café break.

Highlights include the Wall of Love, the Bateau-Lavoir where Picasso painted, the artists of Place du Tertre, the man stuck in the wall at Le Passe-Muraille, the Clos Montmartre vineyard and Sacré-Cœur. Montmartre still feels like a village, with steep cobbled lanes, stairways and small squares, and on foot you notice the details you would miss from a bus.

What you do between Abbesses and the summit

Love tiles, a man in a wall, a pink house

Every stop has one riddle, and the answer is in front of you: something on the 612 tiles of the Wall of Love, a detail of Jean Marais's sculpture of the man walking through stone, the colour of the shutters at La Maison Rose. A sharp eye and some logic do the job, and no knowledge of art history is expected.

Picasso, Renoir and a singer in bronze

Each answer opens a story: Picasso painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon at the Bateau-Lavoir in 1907, Renoir working on Bal du moulin de la Galette in the house that is now the Musée de Montmartre, and the bronze bust that honours Dalida. The audio narration can tell them while you get your breath back on the way uphill.

1.6 km, much of it uphill

You walk only about 22 minutes in total, but Montmartre is a hill, so expect steep cobbled lanes and steps between Place des Abbesses and Sacré-Cœur. Google Maps guides you through the quieter streets behind Place du Tertre and past the vineyard on Rue des Saules.

A café terrace on the way, a view at the end

Nobody times you, so sit down at a café near Place du Tertre or linger by the vineyard, and finish later or on another day. The last stop, the Square Louise-Michel below Sacré-Cœur, looks out over the rooftops of Paris.

Who the Montmartre hunt suits

Paris visitors with a free afternoon

In about 2 hours you see the Wall of Love, the Bateau-Lavoir, Place du Tertre and Sacré-Cœur, which fits neatly into a Paris day next to a museum or a boat trip on the Seine. The riddles lead you into the quieter lanes behind the busy square, where Montmartre still feels like the village it was until 1860.

Children who like a man stuck in a wall

Kids love the man halfway through the stone at Le Passe-Muraille, the hunt for I love you in their own language on the Wall of Love and a real vineyard in the middle of the city. An adult plays along, and the stops lie close together, even if some of them are uphill.

Friends and colleagues on the hill

Split a bigger party into teams of up to 5 at the Abbesses end of the hill, everyone with the game on their own phone, and reunite on the steps of Sacré-Cœur. The whole game is played on public streets and squares.

Good to know

  • Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
  • Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
  • Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.
  • Every purchase helps support stray cats and dogs in Greece.

The route: from the Wall of Love up to Sacré-Cœur and the Square Louise-Michel

10 stops · about 22 min walking · start: Wall of Love (Le Mur des je t'aime) · finish: Square Louise-Michel

The hunt starts at the Wall of Love on Place des Abbesses and climbs past the Bateau-Lavoir to Place du Tertre. It then winds through quieter lanes to Le Passe-Muraille, the bust of Dalida, La Maison Rose, the Clos Montmartre vineyard and the Musée de Montmartre, before reaching Sacré-Cœur and finishing in the Square Louise-Michel just below it. Expect some steep streets and steps. None of the riddles needs a ticket, as the answers sit on walls, busts and house fronts, and if you reach the hill at the foot of Sacré-Cœur rather than at Abbesses, the app can begin there and put the remaining stops in a fresh order.

  1. Wall of Love (Le Mur des je t'aime)

1Wall of Love (Le Mur des je t'aime)Start

Created in 2000 by Frédéric Baron and Claire Kito, this 40-square-metre wall in the Square Jehan-Rictus on Place des Abbesses is covered with 612 enamelled lava tiles. They carry the words I love you 311 times in 250 languages, and the red splashes stand for the pieces of a broken heart.

  2. Le Bateau-Lavoir

    2Le Bateau-Lavoir

Poor artists lived and worked in this modest building on Place Émile-Goudeau in the early 1900s, and Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon here in 1907. The poet Max Jacob named it after the laundry boats on the Seine; it burned down in 1970 and was rebuilt in 1978.

  3. Place du Tertre

    3Place du Tertre

Montmartre was a separate village until it became part of Paris in 1860, and this square near the top of the hill was its main square. Painters, songwriters and poets gathered here from the late 18th century until the First World War, and artists still set up their easels to paint visitors.

  4. Le Passe-Muraille

    4Le Passe-Muraille

On Place Marcel-Aymé, a man seems to be stuck halfway through a stone wall. The sculpture was made in 1989 by the actor Jean Marais and shows the hero of Marcel Aymé's short story Le Passe-muraille, a modest office clerk who discovers that he can walk through walls.

  5. Bust of Dalida

    5Bust of Dalida

The bronze bust on Place Dalida honours the singer Dalida, who lived in Montmartre and died in 1987. It is the work of the French artist Aslan and was unveiled in April 1997, ten years after her death, on the small square the city had named after her the year before.

  6. La Maison Rose

    6La Maison Rose

This small pink house with green shutters stands at the corner of Rue de l'Abreuvoir and Rue des Saules. It became famous through the paintings of Maurice Utrillo, who grew up in Montmartre, and in the early 20th century it was turned into a little restaurant by Germaine Pichot, a friend of Picasso and his circle.

  7. Clos Montmartre Vineyard

    7Clos Montmartre Vineyard

The slopes of Montmartre were covered with vines for centuries, and in 1933 local residents replanted this small vineyard on Rue des Saules to save the land. It has more than 1,700 vines of many grape varieties, and since 1934 the harvest has been celebrated every October with the Fête des Vendanges.

  8. Musée de Montmartre

    8Musée de Montmartre

Founded in 1960, the museum occupies old houses on Rue Cortot. Renoir painted Bal du moulin de la Galette here in 1876, Suzanne Valadon later had her studio here and lived with her son Maurice Utrillo, and the gardens have been recreated after Renoir's paintings.

  9. Sacré-Cœur Basilica

    9Sacré-Cœur Basilica

The white basilica on the summit of Montmartre, the highest point in Paris, was begun in 1875 to designs by Paul Abadie, finished in 1914 and consecrated in 1919. It is built of travertine from Château-Landon, and its great bell, the Savoyarde, weighs almost 19 tonnes.

  10. Square Louise-Michel

    10Square Louise-MichelFinish

This terraced garden below Sacré-Cœur was created in 1927 and in 2004 was renamed after Louise Michel, the anarchist who took part in the Paris Commune of 1871. From its stairways and paths, with a fountain by Paul Gasq and the funicular running alongside, you look out over the rooftops of Paris.

The app is a bit slow and buggy — sometimes it asks you to re-login which is a pain, and eventually it tells you that there are too many logins, so I force quit it and then it works again. The texts are a bit long to read, but overall it’s an interesting way to discover the neighborhood

Ok overall, it was handy to have a route planned for you, we weren’t that bothered about the scavenger hunt aspect. The only one we couldn’t answer is related to the oldest cafe in Place du Tertre as the question wasn’t worded correctly. It was also the first time I heard such a version of the ‘bistro’ legend. Have the tour creators checked their facts? The descriptions were quite lengthy, with unnecessary information spanning a couple of iPhone pages per visited spot

Frequently asked questions

Will Montmartre fit into one afternoon in Paris?

Comfortably, as the game takes about 2 hours. You walk only some 22 minutes between the 10 stops, over 1.6 km, though a good part of it is uphill, and the rest is spent on riddles, stories and views. If a café on Place du Tertre tempts you, pause the game and return to the riddle once the cup is empty.

Where on the hill do we start, and where does the game end?

The opening riddle is at the blue-tiled Wall of Love beside Place des Abbesses, and the closing one in the terraced Square Louise-Michel under Sacré-Cœur, with Paris spread out beneath you. In the app you can also begin at another stop, Place du Tertre for example.

Do we need to book a time or meet a guide in Montmartre?

Neither is needed. The booking reference you receive by email opens the game in the World City Trail app, and you start at the Wall of Love on any day and at any hour you like. With a ticket each, the questions about Picasso, Dalida and the vineyard pop up on every phone in the team.

Do we pay to go into Sacré-Cœur or the Musée de Montmartre?

Not a cent for the game itself, since the hill's riddles are answered from its lanes and squares. Going into the basilica itself is free, while the Musée de Montmartre and the climb to the dome of Sacré-Cœur are paid visits you can add after the last riddle.

What will children like on the Montmartre hill?

With an adult in the team, quite a lot: the man stuck in the wall at Le Passe-Muraille, the search for I love you in their own language among the 311 versions on the Wall of Love, and a working vineyard in the middle of Paris. Rue Lepic, the stairways and the climb to the basilica rule out wheelchairs and wear out anyone pushing a buggy.

In which languages can we play in Montmartre?

The Montmartre riddles come in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese, and each player picks a language in the World City Trail app before opening the first one at the Wall of Love.

Can a group of friends or colleagues play together?

Yes. Buy a ticket per person, make teams of up to five and let them leave Place des Abbesses a few minutes apart; the forecourt of Sacré-Cœur is an easy place to meet at the end. Nothing needs renting, since the game uses public streets and squares only.

What should we bring for the climb up to Sacré-Cœur?

For the stairways up to the basilica, wear shoes with a good grip, and give each team a phone with mobile data, a full battery and a power bank. On a warm day take water, and earphones help you follow the audio narration on busy Place du Tertre.

Start at the Wall of Love

One ticket per player, and shortly after you pay the booking reference is in your inbox. Pick your day, go to the Square Jehan-Rictus on Place des Abbesses and open the first riddle in front of the Wall of Love.
