The Óbidos City Guides answer what nearly every visitor to this walled village ends up wondering: where to drink ginja from a chocolate cup, where to sit down to a proper dinner instead of a picture menu by the gate, how to walk the walls and browse the bookshops before the coaches from Lisbon roll in, and which lagoon beach, surf town or Gothic monastery to add once the village is done. Each guide is a short, honest list that tells you why a place deserves your time, what to order or look for and one practical tip, and it opens in your browser as soon as you have paid.

Three places from the guides
A Nova Casa de Ramiro
Rua da Biquinha, just below the walls
An old house with a big open fireplace a few steps outside the walls, and the restaurant locals name first. Share the duck for two or go for the Mozambique prawns, then pick something from the dessert trolley; with wine, count on €35 to €50 each. From the food guide.
Livraria de São Tiago | Óbidos
Largo de São Tiago, next to the castle
Bookshelves fill a former church right up to the altar, with titles in several languages. This is the shop people point to when they explain why UNESCO made Óbidos a City of Literature. From the things to do guide.
Fort of Peniche
Peniche harbour, 10 min on foot from the bus station
Built in the 16th century to guard the coast, later a high-security jail where the Salazar regime locked up political prisoners, and now the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom. The cells and the 1960 escape are explained clearly in English; give it about an hour and a half. From the day trips guide.
Plan your days in Óbidos
Day one: come through the gate early, or wait for late afternoon when the day-trip coaches have gone, and walk the walls before you look at the tiles of the Church of Saint Mary and the work of Josefa de Óbidos in the municipal museum. Browse the bookshop inside the São Tiago church, have a ginja in a chocolate cup and book dinner just outside the walls on Rua da Biquinha. Day two: head for the coast, either the sandbar beach at Foz do Arelho with a fish lunch on the seafront, or Peniche with its fort and the Cabo Carvoeiro cliffs at sunset. For a rainy or slow day, go to Caldas da Rainha for the morning fruit market on the main square, the Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics shop and an hour in the Dom Carlos I park.
