What is the Rome scavenger hunt?
The Rome scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk a 5.5 km route from the Tiber to the Colosseum, solve a riddle at each of its 10 landmark stops and unlock the stories behind them. It takes about 3 hours, with roughly 70 minutes of actual walking, and you start whenever you like.
Highlights include Castel Sant'Angelo and Bernini's angels on Ponte Sant'Angelo, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the marble elephant of Piazza della Minerva, Trajan's Forum and Michelangelo's square on the Capitoline Hill. In Rome's historic centre, baroque squares and ancient ruins are often only a few minutes' walk apart, so the city is made for exploring on foot.

How the hunt works between the Tiber and the Colosseum
A riddle at every monument
Ten stops, ten riddles, and every solution is already in your line of sight: a name across a portico, a date on a pedestal, a figure in a relief. Observation and a little logic are enough, so there is no Roman history to read up on first.
The story once the riddle falls
Solve it and the stop opens up: why the Pantheon still credits Marcus Agrippa although Hadrian rebuilt it, how the Passetto di Borgo let Clement VII reach Castel Sant'Angelo during the Sack of Rome in 1527, why people say Bernini's river gods flinch at Borromini's church, which is only a story. All of it can be heard instead of read, through the audio narration in the app.
5.5 km across two Romes
Google Maps links the stops and the walking adds up to 70 minutes, from the right bank of the Tiber through the baroque squares and on into the imperial forums. The cobbles do the work on your shoes, and the one slope worth naming is the ramp up the Capitoline Hill.
Nobody is timing you
Take a coffee standing at a bar or an ice cream on Piazza Navona, pick the game up two hours later or on another day. If your hotel sits on the far side of the centre, reorder the stops in the app before you set off.

Who gets the most out of the Rome hunt
A first day in the centro storico
Castel Sant'Angelo, the Pantheon, Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum arrive on one line of 5.5 km, each with a reason to stand still. You leave the centre able to tell a baroque square from an imperial forum instead of filing everything under old Rome.
With children in the team
The clues are things to find, and Rome hands children plenty of them: the marble elephant carrying an obelisk on Piazza della Minerva, the angels with the instruments of the Passion along Ponte Sant'Angelo, the battle scenes spiralling up Trajan's column. An adult plays in the team, and the riddles leave room for the youngest to guess first.
A group that wants to compete
Five players fit into one team and each of them reads the riddles from their own screen, so a group can fan out across a square, argue it out separately and compare notes at the Colosseum. The stops are public ground from the first to the last, which keeps the organising down to buying the tickets.
Good to know
- Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
- No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
- Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
- Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
- Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.
- Every purchase helps support stray cats and dogs in Greece.

Really fun activity to get to know Salzburg. Salzburg is much bigger than I realised and this is a great way to explore. We did it over two days and took our time pausing it to wonder off or stop for lunch. We ended at the foot of the castle and then got the funicular up to the top. The puzzles got harder as they went along but were a lot of fun.
