Royal palaces, the seat of government and the city of peace, in ten riddles

The Hague scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk from the old court quarter to the Peace Palace, solve a riddle at each of 10 landmarks by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories behind it. Count on roughly 2 hours at an easy pace, of which only about 36 minutes are spent walking the 2.9 km between Lange Voorhout and the Peace Palace.

Highlights include the Mauritshuis on the Hofvijver, the Binnenhof with its Gothic Ridderzaal, the Gevangenpoort, Noordeinde Palace with the Royal Stables behind it, and the Peace Palace with the World Peace Flame at its gates. The Hague is flat and green, and the walk leads from royal palaces and the seat of Dutch politics to the city of international law.

What you actually do between Lange Voorhout and the Peace Palace

Statues, gates and a flame

Each stop poses a question that only the scene in front of you can answer: the statue of William of Orange on Het Plein, the old gatehouse of the Gevangenpoort, the stones from many countries laid around the World Peace Flame. Careful looking does the work, and knowing Dutch history beforehand makes no difference.

Counts, painters and murdered statesmen

With every answer a story opens up: how the 13th-century court of the Counts of Holland became the centre of Dutch politics, which painting by Vermeer hangs in the Mauritshuis, and what happened to the De Witt brothers outside the Gevangenpoort in 1672. Turn on the audio narration and the tales play while you look around.

A flat 2.9 km from Lange Voorhout to the Peace Palace

The walking adds up to about 36 minutes, from tree-lined Lange Voorhout around the Hofvijver, through the Binnenhof and along Noordeinde to the Peace Palace. Google Maps leads the way, and there is not a single climb on the route.

A terrace on Het Plein, a pause by the pond

No timer runs: take a seat on one of the café terraces of Het Plein or linger by the Hofvijver, and pick the game up again later that day or on another visit. The riddles simply wait if a shower sends you indoors for an hour.

A day in the Dutch seat of government

In about 2 hours you see where the king works, where Dutch politics has been made for centuries and where the highest court of the United Nations sits, which makes the game a compact introduction for a day trip or a free afternoon. The riddles turn a row of famous façades into places you have actually looked at.

Little ones on the lookout for the king's horses

Kids can look out for the Royal Stables behind Noordeinde, home to the horses and carriages of the royal household, the bronze rider in front of the palace and the flame burning at the gates of the Peace Palace. An adult plays in each team, and at 2.9 km the route suits younger walkers.

International colleagues and visiting delegations

The Hague is home to many embassies and international organisations, and the game works well for their staff: up to 5 players per team, each on their own phone, can start a few minutes apart and finish together at the Peace Palace. It all takes place in public space, so nothing needs booking beyond the tickets.

  • Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
  • Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.

The hunt starts at Escher in The Palace on the tree-lined Lange Voorhout and continues to The Hague Historical Museum and the Mauritshuis on the Hofvijver. From there you cross Het Plein into the Binnenhof, pass through to the Gevangenpoort and walk on to Noordeinde Palace and the Royal Stables. The last stretch leads to the World Peace Flame, and you finish at the Peace Palace. Every clue is read from the pavement, the side of the pond or the palace gates, so no museum or palace ticket is needed, and anyone arriving at Den Haag Centraal can let the app open the game at the nearby Binnenhof and reorder the stops from there.

    The Lange Voorhout Palace was the winter palace of Queen Emma, who lived here until her death in 1934. Today it houses a museum devoted to the Dutch graphic artist Escher, famous for impossible buildings, staircases that never end and endlessly repeating patterns.

    Het Plein is the square right next to the Binnenhof, lined with government buildings and café terraces. In the middle stands a 19th-century statue of William of Orange, who led the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule and is remembered as the Father of the Fatherland.

It probably should be kept more up to date as the Binninhof was entirely off limits due to construction work that seemed to have been going on for quite some time.     Die Schnitzeljagd mit den jeweiligen Punkten und Rätseln war für uns als Gruppe eine schöne Abwechslung zur Stadtentdeckung. Zudem konnten wir alles zu Fuß erledigen, was ebenso sehr vorteilhaft war. Eine kleine Kritik gibt es nur, dass man zu einem Punkt nicht zurück kann. Wir hatten kurzfristig keinen Empfang, dennoch wurde der Punkt von der App als erledigt gesetzt. Somit konnte man nicht alle Punkte 100% nutzen.

    Ik vond de puzzels best lastig om op te lossen. Het was wel een prachtige wandeling door Den Haag, waarbij alle hoogtepunten van de stad werden aangedaan Heel mooi. We hadden moeite om de toer te starten, problemen met inloggen, maar via de uitstekende, snelle whatsapp service kwamen we in contact met de helpdesk en zij leiden ons maar de oplossing. Echt goed!!

    Positiv: – Die Idee, eine Stadt spielerisch selbst zu entdecken – Der günstige Preis – Präsentation vieler Sehenswürdigkeiten – Weiterleitung in der App via Google Maps – Einfache Aufgaben und viele Zusatzinformationen Negativ: – Startpunkt in Den Haag etwas abseits, d.h. weiter entfernt – Rätsel-Aufgaben hier nicht immer gut – Fragen, die über Kamera-Zoom zu beantworten sind, kaum erfüllbar – Informationen entsprechen nicht den jeweiligen Punkten – Manche Sehenswürdigkeit (z.B. der Friedenspalast) fehlt Fazit: Würde ich diese Schnitzeljagd wieder nutzen? Ja, denn sie leitet einen via Google Maps selbstständig durch die Stadt, zeigt einem interessante Stellen auf und ist durch Rätsel und zusätzliche Informationen spannend. Im Falle von Den Haag könnte das Ganze aber noch optimiert werden.

It begins outside Escher in Het Paleis, the former winter palace of Queen Emma on Lange Voorhout, and ends at the gates of the Peace Palace, seat of the International Court of Justice. If you come in by train at Den Haag Centraal, the Binnenhof is the closer place to begin, and the app lets you do exactly that.

Will someone meet us on Lange Voorhout at a set time?

Nobody will, because the game runs without a guide or a schedule. Your booking reference comes by email, you enter it in the World City Trail app and begin whenever it suits you, which is handy when a meeting or a museum visit shifts your plans. Do the Mauritshuis or the Escher museum have to be paid for as part of the game?

No museum is part of the game, since you answer every riddle outside, from the street, the square or the gates. The Mauritshuis, Escher in Het Paleis, The Hague Historical Museum and the Gevangenpoort each charge their own admission if you would like to go in afterwards.

Is the route through The Hague fun for children?

Very much so with an adult on the team: horses and royal carriages are kept in the Royal Stables, William of Orange rides in bronze outside Noordeinde Palace, and stones from countries around the world line the path to the World Peace Flame. Level as the streets are, the route does not suit wheelchairs, and a buggy needs some pushing on the narrower pavements.

Can our international team play in different languages?

It can, as The Hague game is available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch, and each player makes the choice in the World City Trail app. A Dutch colleague and a Spanish one can therefore solve the same riddle on Lange Voorhout side by side, each in their own language.
