Trier packs more Roman stones into a short walk than any other city north of the Alps, and then pours you a glass of Mosel wine. The Trier City Guides help you sort it out: which Roman sites deserve the AntikenCard, why Monday is the wrong day for museums, where to drink Viez from a porcelain jug and which wine estates in Olewig cook dinner for you. Each place comes with a reason to go and one practical tip, and the guides open in your browser right after you pay.

Three places from the guides
Alt Zalawen
Zurlaubener Ufer, on the Mosel
A cosy inn in the old fishermen’s quarter, with a short menu of sausages and schnitzel, generous plates and a terrace above the river. Better value and more local than its bigger neighbours on the same row. From the food guide.
Church of Our Lady
Liebfrauenstraße, next to the cathedral
Built between about 1230 and 1260 on a round plan with twelve petals, it ranks among the two oldest Gothic churches in Germany. After the heavy cathedral it feels bright and quiet, lit by 1950s glass by Jacques Le Chevalier. From the things to do guide.
Wasserfall Saarburg
Saarburg, about 25 minutes by train
A waterfall of 20 metres that tumbles through the middle of town, past an old mill and café terraces. It is the easiest half day out of Trier. From the day trips guide.
Plan your days in Trier
Day one is Roman: the Porta Nigra in the morning, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum and the Palastgarten, then the tunnels of the Kaiserthermen and the arena cellars, before a bus to Olewig for dinner at a wine estate. Day two belongs to the cathedral, the Church of Our Lady and the Hauptmarkt, with a walk over the Roman Bridge and a train to Saarburg or Luxembourg in the afternoon. On a rainy or slow day, combine the Landesmuseum, the toy museum by the Hauptmarkt, the indoor pool by the Kaiserthermen and a long stop in one of the cake shops from the food guide.
