Why explore Palermo with a city game
Palermo’s Arab-Norman buildings, including the Palatine Chapel, the cathedral and the Martorana, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Byzantine mosaics, Islamic arches and Norman towers meet. The Quattro Canti mark the baroque crossroads of the old town, the fountain on Piazza Pretoria is famous for its nude statues, and the Teatro Massimo is one of the largest opera houses in Europe.
A game makes you look closely at domes, statues and façades you would otherwise pass by, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for arancine whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon; Palermo’s summer middays are hot and the old town is busiest then.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details of the façades.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank, water and comfortable shoes; the old town streets can be uneven.
- Add a visit inside the Palatine Chapel or the cathedral, or try street food at a market near the route.
