Budapest on a river cruise stop: a self-guided city game

Yes, Budapest is an easy river-cruise stop for our hunt. Most boats moor on the Pest embankment between the Chain Bridge and Elisabeth Bridge, or at the MAHART International Ship Station on Belgrád rakpart; the exact berth is assigned on arrival. The start at the Hungarian Parliament is about 15 minutes' walk from the Chain Bridge berths, or a short ride on tram 2. The hunt takes about 3 hours and ends at Matthias Church on Castle Hill; boats usually stay all day or overnight.

From the Pest embankment to the Parliament

  1. Before you leave, note where your boat is moored and the nearest bridge. In busy months boats are rafted side by side, so you may walk through other ships to get ashore.
  2. Walk north along the Pest embankment, or the parallel streets, to Kossuth Lajos tér, where the Parliament stands right on the Danube. Allow about 15 minutes from the Chain Bridge berths and about 25-30 minutes from Elisabeth Bridge or Belgrád rakpart.
  3. Or take tram 2 along the riverside, from stops such as Vigadó tér or Széchenyi István tér, and get off at Kossuth Lajos tér. The ride takes about 5-10 minutes.
  4. If your boat is at Szent István Park north of Margaret Bridge, take tram 4 or 6 to Jászai Mari tér, then tram 2 or walk; metro M2 also stops at Kossuth Lajos tér. Allow about 10-20 minutes.
  5. Taxis can be booked to the berth and take about 10 minutes, but the embankment road is busy, so walking or tram 2 is usually as quick.

Tips for Budapest when time is short

  • Your berth is assigned on arrival and can be anywhere from Margaret Bridge to below Liberty Bridge, so note the nearest bridge before you leave the boat.
  • In busy months boats are rafted several abreast; allow a few extra minutes to cross other ships when leaving and returning.
  • To get back from the finish, bus 16 runs from Szentháromság tér or Dísz tér down via Clark Ádám tér and over the Chain Bridge to Széchenyi István tér and Deák Ferenc tér.
  • Castle Hill is a climb of about 50 m from the river; if you prefer to avoid stairs, use bus 16 or the Castle Hill Funicular from Clark Ádám tér.
  • The funicular does not run on Mondays of odd-numbered weeks because of maintenance, so check before you count on it.
  • Tram 2 along the Danube is a scenic ride and the quickest way back along the Pest bank to most berths.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Budapest river cruise stop: questions

Where do river cruise ships dock in Budapest?

Mostly at piers on the Pest side of the Danube, generally between Margaret Bridge and Liberty Bridge, including the MAHART International Ship Station at Belgrád rakpart. The exact berth is assigned on arrival.

Can I walk from the river cruise dock to the Parliament?

Usually yes: the Parliament stands on the same Pest embankment, about 1 km (around 15 minutes) from the Chain Bridge and about 2 km from Elisabeth Bridge. Tram 2 along the river is an alternative.

How do I get back from Matthias Church to my ship?

Bus 16 runs from the Castle District (Szentháromság tér, Dísz tér) across the Chain Bridge to Széchenyi István tér and Deák Ferenc tér in Pest; from there walk or take tram 2 along the embankment to your berth.

Is there a funicular up to Buda Castle?

Yes, the Budavári Sikló runs from Clark Ádám tér at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge up to Szent György tér, a ride of about 95 seconds, with cars every 5 to 10 minutes.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
