Dubrovnik on a cruise stop: a self-guided city game from the port

Yes: Dubrovnik is one of the easiest cruise stops for our scavenger hunt. Almost all ships dock at Gruž cruise port, about 3 km from the Old Town. Libertas buses 1A, 1B and 3 leave from the stop outside the port and reach Pile Gate, where the hunt starts, in about 10-20 minutes. The hunt takes about 2 hours over just 1.3 km and ends at Fort Bokar, a few minutes from Pile Gate and the bus back.

From Gruž cruise port to Pile Gate

  1. Walk out of the Gruž terminal to the Libertas city bus stop right outside the port. Buy your ticket at a kiosk or Libertas point first; it is cheaper than paying on board.
  2. Take bus 1A, 1B or 3 marked Pile and ride to the end of the line at Pile, right by Pile Gate. Allow about 10-20 minutes, longer in summer traffic.
  3. Prefer a taxi? Taxis wait at the port and need about 15 minutes, but up to 40 minutes when traffic towards Pile is heavy on busy mornings.
  4. Walking is possible along the road but takes about 45-60 minutes in the heat, so most passengers skip it. If your ship anchors off the Old Town instead, the tender lands you at the Old Port inside the walls, and you can walk through the old city to Pile Gate.

Tips for Dubrovnik when time is short

  • Dubrovnik caps cruise calls at about two ships a day, but Stradun and the walls still get crowded from late morning to mid-afternoon, so start early.
  • Summers are very hot: the side lanes give shade while Stradun gives little, so carry water and a hat.
  • Start and finish are both near Pile Gate, where the bus back to Gruž leaves, so you never end up far from your ride.
  • The route is only 1.3 km, which leaves time for a coffee or lunch in the Old Town before you head back.
  • Allow extra time for the bus or taxi back to Gruž, because traffic towards the port can be slow.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Dubrovnik cruise stop: questions

How far is the cruise port from Dubrovnik Old Town?

Gruž port is about 3 km from Pile Gate, the main western entrance to the Old Town. By bus it takes about 10-20 minutes.

Which bus goes from the cruise port to Pile Gate?

Libertas lines 1A, 1B and 3 run from the stop outside Gruž port to Pile, next to Pile Gate. A ticket from the kiosk is cheaper than one bought on the bus.

Can I walk from the cruise port to the Old Town?

You can, but it takes about 45-60 minutes along the road and is hot in summer. Most passengers take the bus or a taxi and save their legs for the Old Town.

Can I do the scavenger hunt on a short Dubrovnik port day?

Yes. It takes about 2 hours over 1.3 km, starts where the bus stops and ends at Fort Bokar a few minutes away, so you can be back at Gruž well before all-aboard time.

Do I need tickets for the sights on the route?

No entry tickets are needed for the game: every stop is seen from outside or from public spaces.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
