Menorca on a cruise stop: from Mahón port to the old town

Yes, Mahón is one of the easiest ports to explore on your own. Most ships berth on the waterfront right below the old town, which sits on a cliff about 25 m above the quay. Walk up the Costa de ses Voltes stairway in about 10-15 minutes, or ride the panoramic lift in under a minute. At the top are the Claustre del Carme, the Església de Santa Maria and the Mercat del Peix. Our city guides help you plan the day.

From the cruise port to Mahón old town

  1. Most ships berth at the cruise quay in front of the maritime station on the Mahón waterfront, at the foot of the Costa de ses Voltes. Walk along the waterfront to the wide stone stairway.
  2. Climb the Costa de ses Voltes, a stairway of about 25 m up the cliff, to Plaça d'Espanya and the Claustre del Carme. From the ship it takes about 10-15 minutes.
  3. To skip the stairs, take the public panoramic lift at Costa de ses Voltes, opened in 2021. It runs from the port to the Claustre del Carme viewpoint in under a minute.
  4. If your ship is at Cós Nou on the north shore of the harbour, further from the centre, take a taxi (about 5-10 minutes). Some ships anchor and tender; the tender lands in the harbour.

Tips for Mahón when time is short

  • The old town sits about 25 m above the quay. Save your legs for the streets and take the panoramic lift up if the stairs look daunting.
  • The centre is compact, roughly ten minutes' walk from one end to the other, so you can see a lot without hurrying.
  • If your ship is at Cós Nou on the other side of the harbour, allow extra time or take a taxi.
  • Mahón had a record 133 cruise calls in 2025, with more in spring and autumn: expect busier streets when two or more ships are in.
  • Cobbled streets can be slippery when wet, so wear shoes with grip.
  • Load our city guides before you go ashore: they work offline and give a tip for each place, including boat trips along the harbour inlet.

Why take our city guides ashore

  • They work offline, so you don’t need mobile data or roaming in port.
  • Six guides in one: where to eat, what to see, what to do with kids, going out, day trips and saving money.
  • A short list of places worth your limited time, with a tip for each one.
  • Buy before you sail and open them on your phone as soon as you step ashore.

Mahón cruise stop: questions

Can I walk from the cruise ship to Mahón town centre?

Yes. Ships berth on the waterfront right below the old town. It is a short walk and a climb of about 25 m up the Costa de ses Voltes stairs, about 10-15 minutes in all.

Is there a lift from Mahón port to the town?

Yes. A public panoramic lift at Costa de ses Voltes, opened in 2021, connects the port with the Claustre del Carme in the centre in under a minute.

Do cruise ships tender in Mahón?

Most ships berth at the quay, but some anchor and use tenders, depending on the ship and the day. The tender lands in the harbour.

What if my ship docks at Cós Nou?

Cós Nou is on the opposite, north shore of the harbour and further from the centre. Allow extra time or take a taxi, about 5-10 minutes.

Do the city guides work without mobile data?

Yes. Once opened on your phone they also work offline, which helps in ports where roaming is expensive.

Can I buy just one guide?

Yes. You can choose a single guide, such as the food guide, or all six guides for the city.
