Syracuse on a cruise stop: a self-guided city game from the port

Yes, our Syracuse scavenger hunt is easy to fit into a cruise stop. Most ships berth in the Porto Grande, within walking distance of Ortigia; some larger ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the entrance of Ortigia. From the quays it is a short walk along the harbour to the start at the church of San Tommaso al Pantheon, beside the Foro Siracusano. The hunt takes about 2 hours on flat ground and ends at Castello Maniace, close to the quays.

From the Porto Grande to San Tommaso al Pantheon

  1. Leave the port area on foot and walk along the harbour towards the bridges that lead to Ortigia. No shuttle is needed: the whole area is compact and flat.
  2. Just before the bridges, turn inland to the Foro Siracusano. The church of San Tommaso al Pantheon stands at the end of Corso Gelone, next to the Foro: this is where the hunt starts.
  3. If your ship tenders, you land at the entrance of Ortigia, the same area docked passengers walk through, so the start is close by.
  4. If walking is hard for you, take one of the taxis that wait near the port terminal; the ride takes a few minutes.

Tips for Syracuse when time is short

  • Ortigia is compact and flat, so the historic core needs no shuttle or taxi.
  • The finish at Castello Maniace is at the far tip of Ortigia: allow time for the walk back to the quay before all-aboard time.
  • If your ship tenders, find out when the last tender leaves for the ship and plan your margin around that time, not only the all-aboard time.
  • July and August are very hot and busy; carry water and sun protection.
  • The outdoor market of Ortigia, on the route, is busiest in the morning; keep an eye on your bag there.
  • Carry some euro cash for cafés and market stalls; there are plenty of ATMs on Ortigia.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Syracuse cruise stop: questions

Is Ortigia walkable from the Syracuse cruise port?

Yes. The berths in the Porto Grande are within easy walking distance of Ortigia, and no shuttle is needed for the historic centre.

Do cruise ships tender in Syracuse?

Most ships berth in the bay, but some larger ships anchor and tender passengers to the entrance of Ortigia.

How far is the Neapolis Archaeological Park?

About a 25–30 minute walk from Ortigia, or around 15 minutes by taxi. It is not on the hunt route, so only add it on a long port day.

Is 2 hours enough to see Ortigia on a cruise stop?

It covers the main sights: the hunt walks about 3 km past the Tempio di Apollo, the Duomo and the Fonte Aretusa to Castello Maniace, and leaves time to spare on a normal call.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
