Yes, Thessaloniki is an easy cruise stop for our game. Ships berth alongside at Pier 1, the passenger terminal at the western end of the central waterfront, so no tender is needed. From the port gates it is roughly 30 minutes on foot, or about 10 minutes by taxi, to the Arch of Galerius (Kamara), where the scavenger hunt starts. The hunt takes about 2 hours and ends at The Umbrellas on the seafront, leaving a comfortable margin on a normal port day.

Price range: 4.99 € through 19.99 €From Pier 1 to the Arch of Galerius
- Walk off the ship at Pier 1 and leave through the port gates. The first stretch out of the port is not scenic, but after about 10 minutes you reach the edge of the centre around Ladadika and Aristotelous Square.
- Walk east along the seafront promenade or along Tsimiski Street, past Aristotelous Square, then turn inland up to Egnatia Street and the Arch of Galerius. Allow roughly 30 minutes in total.
- Prefer to ride? Taxis wait at the terminal and are plentiful in the city. Ask for 'Kamara', the local name of the arch, and you are there in about 10 minutes.
- At the arch, open the World City Trail app, enter your booking reference and start the hunt. Everyone in your group can follow on their own phone.

Tips for Thessaloniki when time is short
- No tender is needed: you walk straight off at Pier 1, on the edge of the city centre.
- The hunt ends at The Umbrellas, east of the White Tower, so the walk back to Pier 1 along the seafront is long; take a taxi if time is tight.
- Allow 45 to 60 minutes for getting back to the ship from the end of the route.
- Summers are hot and the waterfront has little shade: bring water, sun protection and a hat.
- Carry some cash in euros for taxis and small purchases.
- Watch for pickpockets around the markets and on crowded public transport.
Why a self-guided game works on a port day
- You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
- Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
- You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
- Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.
Thessaloniki cruise stop: questions
Do cruise ships dock or tender in Thessaloniki?
Ships normally berth alongside at Pier 1 in the city centre, so no tender is needed.
Is Thessaloniki walkable from the cruise port?
Yes. The port is in the centre, and Aristotelous Square and the waterfront are within walking distance along the seafront. The Arch of Galerius, where the hunt starts, is roughly 30 minutes on foot.
Do I need a shuttle in Thessaloniki?
Usually not if you are happy to walk. Taxis are plentiful at the terminal if you prefer to ride.
Can I see the White Tower on a Thessaloniki cruise stop?
Yes. The White Tower is one of the stops on our hunt, near the end of the route on the seafront, together with the Alexander the Great statue.
Is there shade on the walk?
Shade is limited along the waterfront promenade, so take water and sun protection in summer.
Do I need to book a time slot?
No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.
What do we need on the day?
A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
Port and transport details checked in November 2026. Docking positions and timetables change, so always check your ship’s all-aboard time and your cruise line’s port information before you set off.
