Yes, if you go straight there and know your berth. Small ships dock at the Marittima or San Basilio, from where the hunt start at the Frari basilica is about 15-20 minutes away by People Mover and on foot. Larger ships berth on the mainland at Porto Marghera or Fusina and need a transfer first. The hunt takes about 2 hours, crosses the Rialto Bridge and ends near St Mark's, so plan the water bus back.

Tips for Venice when time is short
- Check where your ship actually berths: Marittima or San Basilio (walk into town), Marghera or Fusina (transfer needed) or Chioggia. Berths are assigned per call.
- The People Mover links Tronchetto, the Marittima and Piazzale Roma in about 3 minutes end to end and runs daily from early morning to late evening.
- Venice has no cars and many stepped bridges, which makes it tiring with a wheelchair or a pushchair.
- Rialto and St Mark's are extremely crowded in the middle of the day, so start the hunt as early as you can.
- Venice's day-tripper access fee applied on set dates in spring and summer 2026 and is suspended from 27 July 2026; it returns in 2027, with dates to be announced, so check before you travel.
- From Marghera and Fusina, lock and transfer times mean all-aboard can be well before departure; follow the ship's instructions.
Why a self-guided game works on a port day
- You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
- Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
- You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
- Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.
Venice cruise stop: questions
Can big cruise ships still sail into Venice?
No. Since 1 August 2021 large ships may not pass through St Mark's Basin and the Giudecca Canal. Only ships up to 25,000 GT use the Marittima; larger ones berth on the mainland at Porto Marghera or Fusina.
Is the old town walkable from the cruise terminal?
From the Marittima and San Basilio, yes: Piazzale Roma is one People Mover stop from the Marittima, and the Frari is about 10-15 minutes' walk from there. From Marghera or Fusina you need a transfer first.
How do I get from Fusina to Venice?
Most passengers use the cruise line's transfer, which connects the Fusina terminal with Tronchetto, from where the People Mover runs to Piazzale Roma. Land taxis are not always available at the terminal.
Do cruise passengers have to pay the Venice access fee?
The fee applied on set dates in 2026 and is suspended from 27 July 2026. It will be charged again from 2027, with the arrangements to be announced by the City of Venice.
Which sights does the hunt pass?
Among others Campo San Polo, the Rialto Bridge, Teatro La Fenice, St Mark's Square, St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, before it ends at San Giorgio dei Greci. No entry tickets are needed: the stops are seen from outside.
Do I need to book a time slot?
No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.
What do we need on the day?
A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
Port and transport details checked in November 2026. Docking positions and timetables change, so always check your ship’s all-aboard time and your cruise line’s port information before you set off.
