The route: from the Town Hall to the Speicherstadt

The Hamburg scavenger hunt starts at the Town Hall and leads to St. Peter’s Church, the Chilehaus and the St. Nikolai Memorial. After St. Catherine’s Church you cross into the Speicherstadt warehouse district for the International Maritime Museum, the Kesselhaus and the Speicherstadt Museum, before reaching the Steinerner Orientteppich and the Hohe Brücke.

The 10 stops cover about 4.9 km, roughly 64 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Hamburg with a city game

Hamburg is a city of water and brick. The neo-Renaissance Town Hall was completed in 1897, the tower of St. Nikolai, ruined in the bombing of 1943, now stands as a memorial, and the Chilehaus, shaped like a ship’s bow, belongs with the Speicherstadt to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The warehouses stand on wooden piles along the canals.

A game makes you look closely at brick ornaments, bridges and façades you would otherwise pass, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for a coffee whenever you like.

  • Start in the morning or late afternoon; the light on the Speicherstadt canals is especially good later in the day.
  • Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details on the façades.
  • Bring a charged phone, a power bank, comfortable shoes and a rain jacket: Hamburg weather changes quickly.
  • Finish with a visit to the Maritime Museum or walk on to the Elbphilharmonie in neighbouring HafenCity.
