Why explore Catania with a city game
Catania lives at the foot of Mount Etna and was rebuilt in Baroque style after the earthquake of 1693, using dark lava stone; its centre is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lava-stone elephant on Piazza del Duomo is the city’s symbol, composer Vincenzo Bellini was born here, and Roman ruins appear between the palaces.
A game makes you look closely at statues, balconies and lava-stone façades you would otherwise pass by, and the stories that follow explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for a granita or an arancino whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat; the escape game is best started in daylight.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank, comfortable shoes, water and sun protection.
- Visit the fish market near Piazza del Duomo in the morning for a lively side trip.
- Near the finish, combine the game with a visit inside Ursino Castle or the Greek-Roman theatre.
