The route: from Centraal Station to the Nine Streets

The Amsterdam scavenger hunt starts at Centraal Station and passes the Basilica of St Nicholas on the way to the Beurs van Berlage and the Oude Kerk, the city’s oldest church. You then reach Dam Square with Madame Tussauds, the National Monument and the Royal Palace.

From there you cross the canals to the Anne Frank Monument and the Westerkerk and finish in the Nine Streets. It covers about 3.8 km, roughly 52 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, and no entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Amsterdam with a city game

Amsterdam’s 17th-century canal ring is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the compact centre is made for exploring on foot. The Oude Kerk is the city’s oldest church, the Royal Palace on Dam Square was built as the town hall in the Golden Age, and Rembrandt is buried in the Westerkerk, whose tower rises over the Nine Streets.

A game makes you look closely at gables, hoisting beams and wall plaques you would otherwise walk past, and the stories that follow explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for apple pie whenever you like.

  • Start in the morning: Dam Square and the old centre are calmer before midday.
  • The route passes the edge of the Red Light District, so families may prefer to play in the morning.
  • Start the escape game in daylight, and always check the bike lanes before crossing: cyclists come fast.
  • Bring a charged phone and a power bank; to visit the Anne Frank House afterwards, book tickets well in advance.
