The route: from Plaça de Catalunya to the Picasso Museum

The Barcelona scavenger hunt starts at Plaça de Catalunya and heads to the Palau de la Música Catalana, the cathedral and the Gothic Quarter. You then walk down La Rambla past the Liceu and Gaudí’s Palau Güell to the Columbus Monument, walk out onto the Rambla de Mar, and pass El Cap de Barcelona and the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar on the way to the Museu Picasso.

The route covers about 4.1 km, roughly 51 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Barcelona with a city game

Barcelona’s old town packs two thousand years into a short walk. The Gothic Quarter grew on the site of Roman Barcino, the Palau de la Música Catalana and Gaudí’s Palau Güell are both UNESCO World Heritage sites, and La Rambla leads you from the city centre straight to the old port, where Roy Lichtenstein’s El Cap de Barcelona was installed for the 1992 Olympics.

A game makes you look closely at carvings, mosaics and details you would otherwise rush past, and the stories that follow explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for tapas whenever you like.

  • Start in the morning: La Rambla and the Gothic Quarter get very crowded from late morning on, especially in summer.
  • Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details of façades and monuments.
  • Bring a charged phone, a power bank, water and sun protection; the seafront has little shade.
  • Finish inside the Picasso Museum, booked separately, or with tapas in the surrounding El Born area.
