Nice scavenger hunt: from Garibaldi's square through Vieux Nice to the sea

The Nice scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk from landmark to landmark, solve a riddle at each one by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. From Place Garibaldi to the palms of the Jardin Albert-Ier the game takes about 2 hours, with just 35 minutes of flat walking over 2.6 km to link its 10 stops.

Highlights include the arcades of Place Garibaldi, the tiled dome of Sainte-Réparate Cathedral, the market on Cours Saleya, the Opéra de Nice, the Promenade du Paillon and the Apollo statue of the Fontaine du Soleil. The route is short and flat, and it takes you from the narrow lanes of Vieux Nice to the gardens near the sea.

A riddle on every square, from the old town to the gardens

Arcades, a tiled dome and a sun god

Each riddle is answered by what stands in front of you: the arcades around Garibaldi's statue, the glazed tiles on the dome of Sainte-Réparate, Apollo and his ring of planets on Place Masséna. The arcades and the planets do the explaining, so not a word of French is required.

Angels, a hero and a painter's house

Answers unlock the stories: the legend of the angels who carried Saint Reparata's boat into the bay, Garibaldi, born in Nice in 1807, and the yellow house on Cours Saleya where Matisse lived for years. Hear them from the narrator or read them on screen.

Lanes first, then gardens

Google Maps leads you for 35 minutes over 2.6 km, first through the narrow lanes of Vieux Nice below Castle Hill, then out along the Promenade du Paillon to the gardens by the sea. The whole way is flat.

Socca and flowers on Cours Saleya

The flower and produce market on Cours Saleya lies right on the route, so stop for a coffee or a slice of socca, the local chickpea pancake, while the game waits for you. Carry on later the same day or another time.

Who enjoys a riddle hunt through Nice

Visitors all along the Riviera

Whether you are staying in Nice or coming in for the day from elsewhere on the coast, about 2 hours are enough to see the old town and the squares by the sea, with time left for the beach.

Young fans of angels and mist fountains

Angels steering a boat, a giant marble Apollo and the mist jets of the water mirror on the Promenade du Paillon keep young players busy, and the route has no hills, provided a grown-up joins each team of youngsters.

Reunions, birthday groups and office teams

Up to 5 players share each team, every one on their own phone, so a big group splits into several and leaves Place Garibaldi in turn. The Promenade des Anglais beside the finish is a fine spot to announce the results.

  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.

The hunt starts on Place Garibaldi and leads into Vieux Nice, past the Tour Saint-François and the Chapelle de la Visitation to Sainte-Réparate Cathedral and the Cours Saleya. From the Opéra de Nice you head to the green Promenade du Paillon and Place Masséna with the Fontaine du Soleil, then past the Monument du Centenaire to finish in the Jardin Albert-Ier. The cathedral, the Opéra and the fountain are all puzzled out from the street, so no entry ticket ever comes into it, and if your hotel is on the seafront, the app can begin at the Jardin Albert-Ier and send you through the stops the other way.

    This large square on the edge of the old town is lined with arcades and ochre and yellow façades in the Piedmontese style of the 18th century. It is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of Italian unification, who was born in Nice in 1807, and his statue stands in the middle.

    This tall bell tower in the old town once belonged to a Franciscan monastery. It rises above the narrow lanes near Place Saint-François, where a fish market is traditionally held in the mornings.

    Nice Cathedral on Place Rossetti was built in the baroque style in the 17th century and is known for its dome covered in glazed coloured tiles.     L’idée et bonne. Application limitée, une fois un endroit sélectionné, on ne peut plus changer d’avis et aller vers un autre endroit. 13€ minimum, même quand on voyage seul, pour le coup ça fait cher l’appli utilisable que pour un voyage (et que pour une petite partie de la ville)

    Toll! Durch die Schnitzeljagd erkundet man die ganze Altstadt mit seinen eigenen Augen und ist viel aufmerksamer und achtet auf Details. Wir sind der Route immer wieder abgewichen weil es so viel zu sehen und entdecken gab. Somit ist man den ganzen Tag gut beschäftigt. Es reicht wenn 1 Person die App runterlädt und einmal für die Tour zahlt, man hat die Möglichkeit die Tour über mehrere Tage zu machen (obwohl man nur einmal zahlt). Mit Google Maps sehr easy alles zu finden und alles nah bei einander. Hat Spaß gemacht!

Is the Nice hunt a morning or an afternoon activity?

Either works: at about 2 hours, the game fits a morning before lunch on the beach or an afternoon before an apéritif in the old town. Walking makes up only 35 minutes of that, over 2.6 km and 10 stops, and the rest belongs to riddles, legends and any break you fancy on the way.

Is it true the Nice hunt starts under Garibaldi's statue and ends among palm trees?

It is: Place Garibaldi, with its arcades and the statue of the Nice-born hero, opens the game on the edge of Vieux Nice. The last riddle lies in the Jardin Albert-Ier near the Promenade des Anglais, and the app can open the game elsewhere if another stop suits your hotel better.

Will someone meet us on Place Garibaldi?

Nobody comes to Place Garibaldi, and the clock starts only when you decide. Whoever booked receives the reference by email, types it into the World City Trail app on the spot, and from then on the riddles appear on every player's phone.

Does anything on the Nice route charge admission?

Nothing that the game needs: the cathedral, the chapel and the Opéra all feature in riddles solved outside, and the squares and gardens are public. A performance at the Opéra de Nice is something you would book separately.

Angels, Apollo or the mist jets: what do children remember from the Nice hunt?

Usually the legend of the angels and Saint Reparata's boat, Apollo and the planets on Place Masséna and, on hot days, the mist jets on the Promenade du Paillon, all with an adult playing in their team. The old town lanes are narrow and busy, so a pushchair is awkward there, and the route is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Can half our group play in English and the other half in Dutch in Nice?

Yes, because the language is set on each phone in the World City Trail app. Around Vieux Nice the riddles are available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.

We are organising a seminar on the Riviera: can the hunt be part of it?

Easily: buy one ticket per participant, form teams of no more than five and let them leave Place Garibaldi at intervals. No room needs hiring, and the gardens and the seafront by the finish make a natural meeting point.

What should we bring for a sunny day of riddles in Nice?

Sun cream, a hat and water, since the squares and gardens near the sea are bright for much of the year, plus comfortable shoes for the old town paving. One charged phone with mobile data per team is the only real equipment, and a power bank keeps it going.
