What is the Paris scavenger hunt, and how does it work?

The Paris scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk along the Seine through the centre of Paris, solve a riddle at each of the great landmarks and unlock the stories behind them. It takes about 3 hours, with roughly 77 minutes of actual walking over 6.2 km with 10 stops, and you start whenever you like.

Highlights include the Eiffel Tower, the gilded Pont Alexandre III and the Petit Palais, Place de la Concorde and the Louvre, before the route crosses to Saint-Germain-des-Prés and over the Pont Neuf to the Île de la Cité for the Conciergerie and Notre-Dame. Paris is flat along the river, with bridges, palaces and grand squares one after another, so it is made for exploring on foot.

How the riddles work along the Seine

The answer is on the bridge

Every one of the 10 stops sets a single riddle, and what you need is carved, cast or painted a few steps away: the Zouave on the pier of the Pont de l'Alma, the 381 stone masks of the Pont Neuf, the figures on the four pillars of the Pont Alexandre III. A careful eye and a little logic are the whole toolkit.

Then the story opens

With the riddle out of the way, the stop tells you what it has been through: the flood of 1910 that rose to the Zouave's shoulders, the fortress Philip II Augustus began in 1190 where the Louvre now stands, the cell that held Marie Antoinette in the Conciergerie. If you would rather keep walking, the audio narration takes over the reading.

Six kilometres of riverbank

Google Maps links the stops: 6.2 km in all and 77 minutes of walking, almost all of it on the quays and bridges of the Seine. Paris stays flat the whole way, so the distance weighs less than it looks on the map.

You stop when you want to

No clock runs against you and nobody is waiting at the next stop. Sit down for a coffee at a pavement table, carry on that evening or on another day, and move the stops around in the app if you are staying in a different quarter.

Who the Paris hunt suits

A first morning in Paris

The Eiffel Tower, the Seine bridges, Place de la Concorde, the Louvre and Notre-Dame fall into one line of 6.2 km, and at each stop a riddle makes you stand still. Instead of ticking monuments off a list, you leave knowing why they stand where they do.

Children on the quays

The clues are things to spot, which puts children out in front: the soldier standing in the river, the pyramid in the Louvre courtyard, the grimacing faces of the Pont Neuf. One adult has to be in the team. A wheelchair will not get along these quays, and a pushchair makes the 6.2 km harder than it needs to be.

Friends, couples and workmates

Teams of up to 5 players each follow the game on their own phone, so a group can split up under the Eiffel Tower and argue about the answers again in front of Notre-Dame. All of it happens on public quays, squares and pavements, so there is nothing to reserve and no hour to agree on.

Good to know

  • Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
  • Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
  • Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.
  • Every purchase helps support stray cats and dogs in Greece.

The route: from the Eiffel Tower along the Seine to Notre-Dame

10 stops · about 77 min walking · start: Eiffel Tower · finish: Notre-Dame Cathedral

The hunt starts at the Eiffel Tower and follows the Seine via the Pont de l'Alma and the Pont Alexandre III to the Petit Palais. From Place de la Concorde you continue to the Louvre, cross the river to the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, then return over the Pont Neuf to the Île de la Cité, pass the Conciergerie and finish at Notre-Dame. The starting point and the order of the stops can both be rearranged in the app, and because every riddle is read off the outside of these bridges and buildings, no entry ticket is needed anywhere along the river.

  1. Eiffel Tower

    1Eiffel TowerStart

Gustave Eiffel's company built the tower in 1887–1889 as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair, held for the centenary of the French Revolution. Now 330 metres tall including its antennas, it was the tallest structure in the world until the Chrysler Building in New York overtook it.

  2. Pont de l'Alma

    2Pont de l'Alma

Named after the 1854 Battle of the Alma in the Crimean War, the bridge was opened by Napoleon III in 1856 and rebuilt in 1970–1974. Parisians traditionally judge the level of the Seine by the Zouave soldier statue on its pier: in the great flood of 1910 the water reached his shoulders.

  3. Pont Alexandre III

    3Pont Alexandre III

Tsar Nicholas II laid the first stone of this bridge in 1896, and it is named after his father Alexander III as a symbol of the Franco-Russian alliance. Opened for the 1900 World's Fair, it crosses the Seine in a single steel arch, and gilded bronze Fames stand on its four 17-metre pillars.

  4. Petit Palais

    4Petit Palais

Charles Girault designed the Petit Palais for the 1900 World's Fair, with a domed entrance and a semicircular garden courtyard lined with columns. Today it houses the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts.

  5. Place de la Concorde

    5Place de la Concorde

Laid out by Ange-Jacques Gabriel from 1755 as Place Louis XV, this is the largest square in Paris. During the Revolution Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were guillotined here in 1793, and in the centre stands the Luxor Obelisk, more than 3,000 years old, erected in 1836.

  6. Louvre Museum

    6Louvre Museum

The Louvre began as a fortress built by Philip II Augustus from 1190, became a royal palace and opened as a public museum in 1793. Its glass pyramid by the architect Ieoh Ming Pei opened in 1989, and the collections include Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.

  7. Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés

    7Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Considered the oldest church in Paris, it belonged to an abbey founded in 558 by the Merovingian king Childebert I. Its bell tower, begun around 990, is one of the oldest in France, and the philosopher René Descartes is buried in a side chapel.

  8. Pont Neuf

    8Pont Neuf

Despite its name, the New Bridge is the oldest standing bridge across the Seine in Paris, begun in 1578 and completed in 1607. It was the first Paris bridge built without houses and with pavements for pedestrians, 381 carved stone masks decorate its sides, and the equestrian statue of Henri IV stands halfway across.

  9. Conciergerie

    9Conciergerie

The Conciergerie is part of the Palais de la Cité, the residence of the French kings in the Middle Ages, and during the Revolution it became a prison where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution in 1793. The clock on its corner tower dates back to the 14th century and is considered the oldest public clock in Paris.

  10. Notre-Dame Cathedral

    10Notre-Dame CathedralFinish

Construction of the Gothic cathedral began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully. After the fire of April 2019 destroyed its roof and spire, it was restored, with the spire rebuilt to Viollet-le-Duc's 19th-century design, and it reopened in December 2024.

Frequently asked questions

How much time does the Paris scavenger hunt need?

Plan on about 3 hours for the Paris scavenger hunt. Of that, 77 minutes is walking, the line along the Seine measures 6.2 km and there are 10 stops; the rest goes on the riddles, the photographs and the coffee stops. You can break off at any stop and finish later.

Which stop comes first on the Seine, and which one last?

It starts at the Eiffel Tower and ends in front of Notre-Dame on the Île de la Cité, about 6.2 km of riverbank further on. If your hotel is nearer the cathedral, set a different stop as the first one in the app: the route reads just as well backwards.

Is anyone leading the hunt, and is there a time to keep?

No guide walks with you, and no slot has to be chosen. The booking reference reaches you by email and unlocks the hunt in the World City Trail app, so the first riddle opens the minute you want it to, on any day of the year. Every player needs their own ticket, and from then on the game runs separately on each phone.

Do we have to pay to get into anything on the route?

No. All 10 riddles are solved outdoors, off façades, bridges, statues and squares, so the hunt costs nothing beyond the game itself. Going inside the Louvre, Notre-Dame, the Conciergerie or the Petit Palais is a separate visit that you arrange yourself and that the game does not need.

Is the hunt worth it with children along?

Yes, as long as an adult plays with them. Paris gives children a great deal to look for: the Zouave who measures the floods under the Pont de l'Alma, the four gilded winged figures on the pillars of the Pont Alexandre III, the stone faces of the Pont Neuf, the glass pyramid in the Louvre courtyard. Bear in mind that the quays rule out a wheelchair and that 6.2 km behind a pushchair is a long push.

What languages can the riddles be played in?

In the World City Trail app the Paris hunt switches between six language versions: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch. Pick yours before the first riddle opens.

Can a group or a company play it together?

Yes. Buy one ticket per person and split into teams of no more than five players; several teams can walk the same stretch of the Seine and meet in front of Notre-Dame to compare answers. Since the whole hunt is played in the street, there is no room to hire and no departure time to coordinate.

What belongs in the bag?

One charged phone with mobile data per team, a power bank if the battery is tired, shoes that can take 6.2 km of pavement and cobbles, and a jacket for the rain, because every riddle is played in the open. Earphones make the audio narration easier to follow by the water.

The first riddle is waiting under the Eiffel Tower

Book one ticket per player and the reference arrives by email. After that the only decision left is which morning you walk up to the Eiffel Tower, open the app and let the Seine carry you to Notre-Dame.
