Basel on a river cruise: a self-guided city game from the boat

Yes, Basel works on a river cruise stop if you go straight to the start. Boats moor at one of three landing areas: St. Johann (the most central), Klybeck or Dreiländereck. Tram 11 or tram 8 runs through the old town to Basel SBB station, beside our start at the Strassburger Denkmal; allow around 30 minutes. The hunt takes about 3 hours and finishes at the Mittlere Brücke, close to the St. Johann landing stage. Verdict: comfortable on a full day in Basel.

From the Basel landing stages to the Strassburger Denkmal

  1. Check your cruise documents for your landing stage. St. Johann is close to the old town; Klybeck and Dreiländereck lie further out in the harbour and are not walkable for most people.
  2. From St. Johann, walk to the nearby tram 11 stop on the St. Johann side and ride towards Aesch to Bahnhof SBB. It takes about 15 minutes on the tram, through Schifflände, Marktplatz and Barfüsserplatz.
  3. From Klybeck or Dreiländereck, take tram 8 from Kleinhüningen towards Neuweilerstrasse. It runs straight through the old town to Bahnhof SBB in about 25 minutes, plus the walk to the stop, and comes every few minutes in the daytime.
  4. Get off at Bahnhof SBB: the Strassburger Denkmal stands in the Elisabethenanlage park right next to the station. The hunt starts here, so open the app.
  5. Prefer a taxi? From any of the landing stages to Basel SBB / Centralbahnplatz takes about 10-15 minutes.

Tips for Basel when time is short

  • Check which of the three landing stages your boat uses: St. Johann is close to the old town, while Klybeck and Dreiländereck are not walkable for most people.
  • Tram 11 on the St. Johann side and tram 8 on the Kleinhüningen side both run through Schifflände, Marktplatz and Barfüsserplatz to Bahnhof SBB, so the tram is the quickest way to the start.
  • The hunt finishes at the Mittlere Brücke, about 15 minutes' walk back along the Rhine to St. Johann; from Schifflände, tram 8 takes you back to Kleinhüningen.
  • The old town around the Münster sits on a hill above the Rhine, with some steep lanes and steps between the river and Münsterplatz.
  • If Basel is where your cruise begins or ends, the game also fits well into the hours before boarding or after you leave the boat.

Why a self-guided game works on a port day

  • You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
  • Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
  • You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
  • Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.

Basel river cruise stop: questions

Where do river cruise boats dock in Basel?

At three landing areas: St. Johann (the most central), Klybeck, and Dreiländereck at the border triangle. Your cruise documents state which one your boat uses.

Can I walk from the St. Johann landing stage to the old town?

Yes. Marktplatz is about 15 minutes on foot along the Rhine. The Klybeck and Dreiländereck stages are much further out and better reached by tram 8 or taxi.

Which tram goes from the river cruise docks to Basel SBB station?

Tram 11 from the St. Johann side and tram 8 from Kleinhüningen both run through the old town to Bahnhof SBB, right next to the start of the hunt.

How much time do I need for the game in Basel?

Plan around 30 minutes to reach the start, about 3 hours of play and the way back from the Mittlere Brücke, plus at least 1 hour in hand before all-aboard time.

Do I need to book a time slot?

No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.

What do we need on the day?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
