The route: from the Mariensäule to the Clock Tower

The Graz scavenger hunt starts at the Mariensäule at Eisernes Tor and leads to the Opera House and through the Stadtpark. Back in the old town you visit the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II, Graz Cathedral, the Glockenspiel and the arcaded courtyard of the Landhaus. After the City Hall you climb Sporgasse to the finish at the Clock Tower (Uhrturm).

The route covers about 2.6 km, roughly 40 minutes of walking. You can start elsewhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Graz with a city game

The historic centre of Graz is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is compact enough to cover on foot. Red-tiled roofs, Renaissance courtyards like the Landhaus and Baroque buildings around the Cathedral sit below the Schlossberg, where the Clock Tower has watched over the city for centuries. Look closely at its dial: the hands are reversed, with the hour hand longer than the minute hand.

A game turns that walk into a shared adventure. Each riddle makes you look at doorways, coats of arms and façades you would otherwise pass, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule and time for coffee whenever you like.

  • Start in the morning or late afternoon, when the lanes around Herrengasse and Sporgasse are quieter.
  • Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details on the façades.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: Sporgasse rises steadily towards the Schlossberg, and the old town has plenty of cobbles.
  • Finish with the view over the red roofs from the Clock Tower, then take a break in a café below.
