The route: from the Frari to San Giorgio dei Greci

The Venice scavenger hunt starts at the Frari Basilica and leads through Campo San Polo to the Rialto Bridge. You continue via Campo San Salvador and the Teatro La Fenice to St Mark’s Square, St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace, then past San Zaccaria to the Greek church of San Giorgio dei Greci.

The 10 stops cover about 3 km, roughly 41 minutes of walking. You can start anywhere or change the order in the app, with Google Maps guiding you through the alleys. No entry tickets are needed: every riddle uses the outside of the buildings.

Why explore Venice with a city game

Venice has no cars, so the city is made for walking: narrow alleys open onto quiet squares, and every few minutes a bridge takes you over a canal. You pass the Frari, where Titian is buried, the Rialto Bridge completed in 1591, La Fenice, rebuilt after a fire in 1996, and the leaning bell tower of San Giorgio dei Greci.

A game makes you look closely at winged lions, inscriptions and carved wellheads you would otherwise pass by, and the stories that follow explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for cicchetti whenever you like.

  • Start early in the morning: the Rialto Bridge and St Mark’s Square fill up quickly from mid-morning, especially in summer.
  • Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details of façades and monuments.
  • Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes; in autumn and winter, check the acqua alta forecast.
  • Finish inside St Mark’s Basilica or the Doge’s Palace, booked separately, or with cicchetti in a nearby bacaro.
