Why explore Palma with a city game
Palma’s old town is a maze of stone lanes and hidden courtyards between Plaça Major and the sea. The Gothic cathedral, La Seu, rises above the bay, and Antoni Gaudí worked on its interior. La Llotja was the medieval merchants’ exchange, the Basilica of Sant Francesc holds the tomb of Ramon Llull, and the vintage wooden train to Sóller still leaves from Plaça d’Espanya.
A game makes you look closely at doorways, coats of arms and façades you would otherwise pass by, and the stories explain what you just saw. Everyone plays on their own phone, there is no schedule, and you can stop for an ensaïmada whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon; the area around the cathedral is busiest and hottest at midday in summer.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details of the façades.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank, water and comfortable shoes; the old town lanes are narrow and paved.
- Add a visit inside La Seu, or relax on the seafront promenade near Sa Feixina Park.
