From Dante's statue to the poplar villa, one riddle at a time
The Trento scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk from landmark to landmark, solve a riddle at each one by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. Count on about 2 hours from Dante's statue to the Renaissance villa near the Adige: 46 minutes of that is walking, 4 km in all across 10 stops, and the rest belongs to riddles and stories.
Highlights include the Dante monument, Buonconsiglio Castle of the prince-bishops, Port'Aquila with the Eagle Tower, the frescoed houses of Piazza del Duomo, the cathedral where the Council of Trent opened in 1545, and Renzo Piano's MUSE. Trento's compact old town lies in the Adige valley among the mountains, and the walk ends in the modern Le Albere district near the river.

A game through the city of the Council
Eagles, wheels and painted façades
Each stop keeps its riddle in plain sight: the Eagle Tower above Port'Aquila, the frescoed Case Cazuffi-Rella on Piazza del Duomo, the round window on the cathedral's north side shaped like a wheel of fortune. Look carefully and think it through, as nothing about Trento has to be learned beforehand.
Prince-bishops, a council and a poet
Solved riddles open the stories: how the prince-bishops ruled from Buonconsiglio Castle for some five centuries, why the Council of Trent gathered here from 1545, and what it meant to raise a statue of Dante in 1896, when Trento still belonged to Austria. Prefer to listen while you walk down Via Belenzani? The audio narration reads each one aloud, leaving your eyes free for the painted palace fronts.
From the railway square to the riverside
Around 46 minutes of the game is walking: from Piazza Dante to the castle, across the old town along Via Belenzani, then south to the new Le Albere district near the Adige. Between the castle, the cathedral and the river, Google Maps keeps every team on course.
Espresso beside Neptune
No clock is running, so sit down at a café on Piazza del Duomo beside the Neptune Fountain, or put the game aside and finish it the next day. If you come in by train, Piazza Dante is the green square right outside the station doors, and the first riddle starts almost as soon as you step off.

Rail travellers and short stays
With about 2 hours needed and a start opposite the station, the game fits a stopover on a journey through the Adige valley or a first afternoon in town. The riddles give the old centre a thread to follow, from the castle to the cathedral.
Young players, moats and an eagle tower
Young players get a castle with a moat, an eagle on a tower over a city gate, Neptune in the cathedral square and a science museum whose roofs look like mountains. An adult plays in every team, and the route is not suitable for wheelchairs.
Colleagues, classes and clubs
Teams take up to 5 players, every one with the game on their own phone, and a large group can stagger its teams at the Dante monument a few minutes apart. Finishing in the open spaces of Le Albere gives everyone room to gather and compare answers.
Good to know
- Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
- No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
- Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
- Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
- Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.
