Fun facts about Central Park

  • A village that disappeared: Seneca Village, home to around 225 people, most of them African Americans, stood near today's West 80s, with churches and a school. Its residents were forced out in 1857 to make way for the park.
  • The oldest monument in the park: Cleopatra's Needle was carved around 1475 BC for Pharaoh Thutmose III in Heliopolis, Egypt. It is about 21 metres (69 feet) tall and weighs around 200 tons.
  • A castle with a weather station: Belvedere Castle, designed by Calvert Vaux, was built as a viewpoint folly. Since 1919 it has housed weather instruments, and Central Park's official temperature readings come from here.
  • No more cars: since June 2018 the park's loop drives have been closed to private cars, leaving them to walkers, runners, cyclists and horse-drawn carriages.

Come un obelisco attraversò l’Atlantico

Cleopatra's Needle has nothing to do with Cleopatra. It stood in Heliopolis for some 1,400 years before the Romans moved it to Alexandria in 13 or 12 BC, to a temple begun by Cleopatra; the name stuck. Egypt's ruler later offered it to New York, and the job of moving it went to Henry Gorringe, a US Navy officer. His crew lowered the 200-ton stone, slid it into the steamship Dessoug through a hole cut in the bow and sailed in June 1880. Getting it from the Hudson to the park took 112 days: 32 horses hauled it across Manhattan, then a steam engine pushed it over a trestle to its hilltop behind the Metropolitan Museum.

Cosa mangiare a New York

  • Pastrami on rye: towering sandwiches of spiced, smoked beef. Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side has served them since 1888.
  • A hot dog or pretzel from a cart: the carts at the park's entrances are part of the scenery.

  • Shakespeare in the Park runs in summer. Tickets are free but limited and are usually given out on the day of the performance, so check the Public Theater's website for how to get them.
  • The north end is quieter: the Conservatory Garden, the park's only formal garden, and the Harlem Meer are worth the walk.
