Why explore Basel with a city game
Basel’s medieval old town rises above the Rhine, close to where Switzerland, France and Germany meet. The red sandstone Minster, where Erasmus of Rotterdam is buried, looks out over the river, the Rathaus glows with its red-painted façade, and the Spalentor is one of the old city gates still standing. The Kunstmuseum grew from a collection the city bought in 1661.
A game makes you look closely at gates, frescoes and fountains you would otherwise miss, and the stories explain what you see. Everyone plays on their own phone, with no schedule and time for a coffee by the river whenever you like.
- Start in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the busiest hours around the Marktplatz and the Münsterplatz.
- Start the escape game in daylight; its puzzles rely on details of façades, gates and fountains.
- Bring a charged phone, a power bank and comfortable shoes; some old town lanes are steep and cobbled.
- After the Middle Bridge, cross the Rhine on one of the small current-driven ferries, or join the locals for a summer swim.
