What happens on the Budapest scavenger hunt?
The Budapest scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk from landmark to landmark, solve a riddle at each one by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. It takes about 3 hours, with around 64 minutes of actual walking over 4.7 km and 11 stops, and you start whenever you like.
Highlights include the Hungarian Parliament, St Stephen's Basilica, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church. The route joins Pest and Buda across the Danube, and the climb to Castle Hill rewards you with wide views over the river and the Parliament on the opposite bank.

How the hunt crosses the Danube
The façade holds the answer
One riddle belongs to each of the 11 stops, and the answer is cut, cast or tiled somewhere on the building in front of you. There is nothing to prepare: a careful look at a gable, a fountain or a gate gets a team through.
Lions, a crown and a bronze bird
Behind each answer sits the story: the lions of the Chain Bridge that legend says have no tongues, though the tongues are simply out of sight from below; the seven towers Frigyes Schulek gave the Fisherman's Bastion, one for each Magyar tribe; the coin thrown into the Matthias Fountain that is supposed to bring you back. The audio narration will read all of it out while you walk.
Five kilometres and one hill
Google Maps carries the navigation: 4.7 km in total with 64 minutes of walking, flat through Pest and then up to Castle Hill on the Buda side. The covered escalator at the Castle Garden Bazaar takes some of the climb out of the second half.
Start and stop as you please
No clock is running against a team, so lunch on Liberty Square or a long look at the river from the bastion costs nothing. Carry on in the evening or another day, and put the stops in your own order in the app if you are sleeping on the Buda side.

Who ends up enjoying it
Pest and Buda in one go
Parliament, the basilica, the Chain Bridge, the castle, the bastion and Matthias Church fall into a single line of 4.7 km that crosses the river once. It is the cleanest way to work out how the two halves of the city fit together.
Children on Castle Hill
Children usually find the detail first, and there is a lot of it: a stone zero three metres tall, a bronze Turul over a castle gate, towers to count on the bastion, lions to inspect for tongues. No team goes out without a grown-up. The hill, the steps and the cobbles make a wheelchair impossible and a pushchair a serious effort.
Friends with a free afternoon
Five players at most make up a team, each with the game on their own phone, which lets a larger group split in two or three and meet again at Matthias Church. Public streets, a bridge and a castle courtyard are the whole stage, so nothing has to be reserved for anyone.
Good to know
- Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
- No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
- Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
- Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
- Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.
- Every purchase helps support stray cats and dogs in Greece.

It was a lot of fun and the riddles were pretty straight forward to do. It was a very hot day in the city but we still walked to all of the sites and enjoyed the game. I have been living in Budapest for a year but still got to experience and learn about new places I had never been before!
