Up the hill into Castello, one riddle at a time

The Cagliari scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk from the Roman past up into the walled Castello district and down to the port, solve a riddle at each of 10 landmarks and unlock the stories and legends behind them. Allow about 3 hours in all: the 3 km between the gardens and the port take only around 45 minutes on foot, the rest goes on riddles, stories and the climb into Castello, and you can begin on any day and at any hour.

Highlights include the Roman Amphitheatre, Porta Cristina, the cathedral of Santa Maria, the Torre dell'Elefante and the Bastione di Saint Remy with its terrace over the rooftops. Cagliari is built on hills, so the route mixes medieval lanes and old ramparts with wide views over the city, the lagoon and the sea.

From the fig trees to the town hall: playing in Cagliari

A marble elephant and a queen's gate

Each stop hides its riddle in something you can see from outside: the small elephant on its ledge high on the Pisan tower, the neoclassical arch of Porta Cristina, the statue of Charles Felix in Piazza Yenne. Careful looking and a little logic solve it, and you need no Italian and no history lessons.

Pisans, Savoy kings and stone giants

Every answer unlocks the story behind the place: how the Pisans fortified Castello in the 14th century, why a gate carries the name of Maria Cristina of Bourbon, and who the Giants of Mont'e Prama are. Turn on the audio narration and listen while you climb between the bastions.

Gardens to harbour in 3 km, one stretch uphill

Only about 45 minutes of the game is walking: from the Giardini Pubblici past an amphitheatre carved into the rock, up through Castello along the old walls, then down the staircase of Saint Remy towards the port. Google Maps shows the way through the narrow lanes from one stop to the next.

A break on the terrace, a coffee in Piazza Yenne

Nothing runs against the clock, so rest on the Terrazza Umberto I above the rooftops or sit down in Piazza Yenne, then carry on later or on another day. The app also points out local food and shops along the way, a handy first taste of Sardinia.

  3. Play when you like Start whenever you are ready, walk at your own pace and pause any time. No guide, no fixed schedule.

Port days, families and colleagues in Sardinia's capital

A day ashore or a first afternoon

In about 3 hours you take in Roman Cagliari, the walled Castello and the view from Saint Remy, and you finish in Piazza Matteotti close to the port. That suits a cruise call or the day you arrive, and the riddles keep the uphill stretches lively.

Kids on the lookout for elephants and giants

Children like searching for the marble elephant on its tower, picturing 10,000 spectators in a theatre cut out of the rock and looking down over the whole city from the bastion terraces. An adult plays in every team, and the steep lanes of Castello are easier without a pushchair.

Teams who regroup by the Palazzo Civico

A team holds up to 5 players with a phone each, and a larger party can split into several teams that set off under the jacarandas of the Giardini Pubblici a few minutes apart. The route ends in Piazza Matteotti, a garden square in front of the town hall, which makes an easy place to meet again.

Good to know

  • Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
  • Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
  • Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.
  • Every purchase helps support stray cats and dogs in Greece.

The route: from the Giardini Pubblici through Castello down to Piazza Matteotti

10 stops · about 45 min walking · start: Public Gardens (Giardini Pubblici) · finish: Piazza Matteotti

The hunt starts in the Giardini Pubblici and leads past the Roman Amphitheatre to Porta Cristina, where you enter the Castello district. Inside the walls you pass the National Archaeological Museum, the cathedral, the Bastione di Santa Croce and the Torre dell'Elefante, then walk down via the Bastione di Saint Remy to Piazza Yenne and finish in Piazza Matteotti near the port. Every riddle is read from the lanes, gates and bastion terraces, so you never stand in a ticket queue, and if you are staying down in Marina, the app can open the game at Piazza Matteotti and send you uphill in a different order.

  1. Public Gardens (Giardini Pubblici)

    1Public Gardens (Giardini Pubblici)Start

The city of Cagliari bought these gardens in 1840 and laid them out for strolling in 19th-century style, with old jacaranda trees, palms and two giant fig trees. A tree-lined avenue leads to the Galleria Comunale d'Arte, housed in a former royal gunpowder magazine.

  2. Roman Amphitheatre

    2Roman Amphitheatre

The Roman amphitheatre was built around the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, largely carved out of the rock at the foot of the Buon Cammino hill. It could hold up to 10,000 spectators, seated by social rank, and was rediscovered in the 19th century through excavations led by the canon Giovanni Spano.

Frequently asked questions

How much of the day does the Cagliari game take up?

Around 3 hours, from the first riddle in the gardens to the last one by the town hall. Walking makes up around 45 minutes of that, over 3 km and 10 stops from the Giardini Pubblici to Piazza Matteotti, and the rest goes on riddles, stories and the views from the bastions. If the sun gets too strong, stop where you are and pick up at the same stop on another day.

Does the game begin up in Castello or down by the port?

It starts in the Giardini Pubblici, the 19th-century public gardens with jacarandas and two giant fig trees, and ends in Piazza Matteotti near the port, in front of the white Palazzo Civico. If you arrive by train or by ship and would rather begin at the bottom of the hill, the app lets you start at another stop.

Will someone be waiting for us under the fig trees at an agreed time?

Neither. You book online, receive a booking reference by email and enter it in the World City Trail app, then play on the day and at the hour that suit you, early or late if you want to dodge the midday heat in summer. Tickets are per player, and the riddles from Porta Cristina to Piazza Yenne appear on every phone in the team at the same moment.

Will the Cittadella dei Musei or Santa Maria cathedral ask us for a ticket?

The game itself never sends you indoors, since Castello's gates, façades and bastion terraces hold every answer. The National Archaeological Museum, home to the Giants of Mont'e Prama, charges admission and makes a good add-on before or after, and any other interior along the route is a separate visit.

Will children enjoy a morning in Castello?

Usually they love it, provided a grown-up is part of every team. Kids enjoy spotting the little marble elephant that gives the tower its name, imagining a crowd of 10,000 Romans in an arena hewn from the rock and climbing the grand staircase of the Bastione di Saint Remy. Wheelchairs cannot manage the route, and Castello's ramps and stairways turn a pushchair into a workout.

Can our group play the Cagliari riddles in Dutch or German?

Yes, the Cagliari game exists in six languages, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch, each set per player in the app. Each player picks a language in the World City Trail app, so a mixed group can solve the same riddles side by side in different languages.

Does the hunt work as a team outing in Cagliari?

Very well. Book one ticket per person, split into teams of up to five and let them leave the Giardini Pubblici at short intervals, and the first team down in Piazza Matteotti waits for the rest in the garden square. From the gardens to the harbour you stay on public ground, which means no room or venue to reserve.

Which shoes and kit suit a day on Cagliari's hills?

Comfortable shoes with good grip for the slopes and steps of Castello, water and sun protection in the warm months, and a charged smartphone with mobile data in each team. A power bank helps too, since the phone handles the navigation as well as the riddles.

Two giant fig trees mark your starting line

Each player plays on a separate ticket, bought online, and the booking reference lands in your inbox right after. On the day you choose, walk into the Giardini Pubblici, open the app and start your way up towards Castello.
