Human towers, gladiators and a trompe-l'oeil square in Tarragona

The Tarragona scavenger hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk between 10 landmarks, solve a riddle at each one by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. The game lasts about 2 hours, but the walking only adds up to some 32 minutes over 2.4 km, and you choose the moment the first riddle opens.

Highlights include the Castellers Monument and the Balcó del Mediterrani on the Rambla Nova, the Roman amphitheatre by the sea, the Roman circus, Plaça de la Font and the cathedral at the top of the old town. Roman Tarraco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its ruins sit right between the modern streets, so the city's history is easy to explore on foot.

Riddles from the Rambla Nova down to the sea and up to the cathedral

A tower of bronze people, an iron railing and painted windows

Each of the 10 stops hides a riddle you solve on the spot: the bronze castell on the Rambla Nova with its climbers standing on one another's shoulders, the railing of the Balcó del Mediterrani, the arena of the amphitheatre below, the trompe-l'oeil mural of Plaça dels Sedassos where painted windows pass for real ones. A careful look and some reasoning are all it takes.

Gladiators, chariot races and a martyred bishop

Every answer unlocks a piece of Tarraco and the city that followed: the amphitheatre built by the sea in the 2nd century AD, Bishop Fructuosus and his two deacons burned there in 259, the chariot track of the circus that still shapes Plaça de la Font, and the cathedral raised where Rome's temple precinct once stood. Prefer to listen? The audio narration reads out the stories of the arena, the circus and the cathedral while you lean on the railing above the sea.

2.4 km from the boulevard to the old upper town

Around 32 minutes of walking lead along the Rambla Nova to the sea, past the amphitheatre and then uphill beside the circus into the Part Alta, the old upper town, ending at its highest point. Google Maps shows the way, and the climb at the end is short but noticeable.

Market stalls and a touch of iron for luck

There is no timer, so wander the stalls of the modernista Mercat Central for local cheese, ham or fish, touch the Balcó's railing for good luck as locals do, follow the app's tips to a café in the Part Alta and finish the game later or on another day.

Day trips from Barcelona, young gladiator fans and teams on the Costa Daurada

A day out from Barcelona

Tarragona is a short train ride down the coast from Barcelona, and about 2 hours of riddles link the boulevard, the Roman remains and the old town, leaving the afternoon for the beach or a museum. You cross two thousand years of the city in one compact walk.

Young gladiator fans

Children love counting the people in the bronze human tower, working out which windows on the mural are only painted and looking down into a real Roman arena. An adult plays in every team, and the market and the benches of the Rambla make easy pauses.

Colleagues on a Costa Daurada trip

Teams of up to 5 can play side by side, each person following the riddles on their own phone, leaving the Castellers Monument a few minutes apart and regrouping in front of the cathedral. The game uses only open streets and squares, so the tickets are the only thing to book.

Good to know

  • Bring a charged smartphone with mobile data; a power bank helps.
  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.
  • Family friendly; children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users and difficult with strollers.
  • Teams of up to 5 work best; bigger groups split into several teams, one ticket per player.
  • Every purchase helps support stray cats and dogs in Greece.

The route: from the Castellers Monument down to the sea and up through the Part Alta to the cathedral

10 stops · about 32 min walking · start: Castellers Monument · finish: Tarragona Cathedral

The hunt starts at the Castellers Monument on the Rambla Nova, passes the Font del Centenari and the Central Market and follows the boulevard down to the Balcó del Mediterrani. From the Roman amphitheatre you climb past the Roman circus to the City Hall on Plaça de la Font, continue through the Part Alta to Plaça dels Sedassos, and finish at Tarragona Cathedral. Since the Roman stones, the market hall and the cathedral front are all read from the street, nobody asks you for an admission ticket, and if you arrive by train you may prefer to open the game at the Balcó del Mediterrani, which the app allows before lining up the rest.

  1. Castellers Monument

    1Castellers MonumentStart

This bronze monument on the Rambla Nova, by the sculptor Francesc Anglès, shows a complete castell, a human tower of people standing on one another's shoulders. Castells were declared UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010, and Tarragona hosts one of the most important castells competitions in Catalonia.

  2. Font del Centenari

    2Font del Centenari

The Font del Centenari is a monumental stone fountain on the Rambla Nova, the main boulevard of modern Tarragona. Its name means Fountain of the Centenary, after the anniversary it was built to commemorate.

  3. Central Market (Mercat Central)

    3Central Market (Mercat Central)

Tarragona's Central Market is a modernista market hall designed by the architect Josep Maria Pujol de Barberà and opened in 1915. It stands on Plaça de Corsini, and its stalls of fish, cured ham, cheese and local produce make it a good place to taste the region.

  4. Rambla Nova

    4Rambla Nova

The Rambla Nova is the main boulevard of the new town that grew up beyond the old city in the 19th century. Lined with trees, cafés and monuments, it runs towards the sea and ends at the Balcó del Mediterrani, beside the statue of the medieval admiral Roger de Llúria.

  5. Balcó del Mediterrani

    5Balcó del Mediterrani

At the sea end of the Rambla Nova, the Balcó del Mediterrani is a viewpoint high above the coast, the port and the railway line. Local custom says you should touch its iron railing for good luck, and from here you look down on the Roman amphitheatre and the Miracle beach.

  6. Roman Amphitheatre

    6Roman Amphitheatre

Tarraco's amphitheatre was built in the 2nd century AD right beside the sea, partly cut into the rock, for gladiator fights and public spectacles. Bishop Fructuosus and his deacons Augurius and Eulogius were burned here in 259, and the remains of a Visigothic basilica and a Romanesque church still stand in the arena.

  7. Roman Circus

    7Roman Circus

Tarraco's circus for chariot races was built in the late 1st century AD, under Emperor Domitian, and was about 325 metres long. Much of it now lies beneath the houses of the old town, but some of its great vaults can still be seen, and Plaça de la Font follows the line of its track.

  8. Tarragona City Hall

    8Tarragona City Hall

Tarragona City Hall stands on Plaça de la Font, a long square whose shape follows the track of the Roman circus that lies beneath it. During the Santa Tecla festival in September, the square in front of the City Hall is one of the main stages for the castellers' human towers.

  9. Plaça dels Sedassos

    9Plaça dels Sedassos

Plaça dels Sedassos is a small square in the Part Alta, the old upper town, and its name means the sieves in Catalan. One of its walls is covered by a large painted mural in trompe-l'oeil style, which plays with perspective so that painted windows and figures seem part of the real buildings.

  10. Tarragona Cathedral

    10Tarragona CathedralFinish

Tarragona Cathedral stands on the highest point of the old town, where the temple precinct of Roman Tarraco once stood, and was built mainly in the 12th and 13th centuries. Its façade combines Romanesque side doors with a Gothic central portal and a large rose window, and it is dedicated to Saint Thecla, the city's patron saint.

Tour veramente molto piacevole e bella esperienza. L’audioguida è interessante e ben realizzata.

Frequently asked questions

Is there time for the beach after the Tarragona hunt?

Yes, since the game takes about 2 hours, of which roughly 32 minutes are spent walking, over 2.4 km and 10 stops from the Castellers Monument on the Rambla Nova to Tarragona Cathedral. The rest of the time goes on riddles and on the stories of gladiators, chariot races and human towers. Break for lunch whenever you like and carry on afterwards or on another day.

Where on the Rambla Nova does the game start, and where does it end?

The first riddle is at the Castellers Monument, the bronze human tower on the Rambla Nova, and the last at the cathedral on the highest point of the Part Alta. If you come in by train, note that the Balcó del Mediterrani stands right above the railway line, so you can open the game there in the app and leave the boulevard for later.

Is there a fixed start time, or someone waiting for us at the monument?

Nobody waits for you and no start time is fixed: you book online, the booking reference arrives by email, and once it is in the World City Trail app the game is ready on any day and at any hour. Every member of the group needs a ticket of their own, and the castells, chariots and saints then turn up in the riddles on each phone.

Do we pay to go down into the amphitheatre or the vaults of the circus?

Only if you want to go inside. The game itself never needs a ticket, as every riddle is solved from the street, the balcony or the square, but walking down into the amphitheatre or through the vaults of the circus is a paid visit, easy to add before or after you play.

Which Roman details win over young players in Tarragona?

With an adult in the team, they tend to love the bronze human tower, the trompe-l'oeil windows of Plaça dels Sedassos, the story of the gladiators and the view down into the arena by the sea. The climb into the Part Alta rules out wheelchairs and makes a pushchair hard going.

Which languages can we play in between the Rambla and the cathedral?

Six languages are on offer for the Tarraco riddles, namely English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch, but Catalan is not among them. You pick one in the World City Trail app beside the Castellers Monument, and the riddles stay in that language all the way up to the cathedral.

Can our group turn the Tarragona hunt into a team challenge?

Yes: give everyone a ticket, form teams of up to five and send them off from the Castellers Monument a few minutes apart, then meet again in front of the cathedral. Every riddle is in a public street or square, so no venue is needed, and the cafés of the Part Alta are close at hand for comparing answers.

How do we prepare for the Mediterranean sun on the Balcó?

Sun cream, a hat and water, since the Balcó and the area around the amphitheatre lie open to the Mediterranean sun, and shoes with grip for the climb into the old town. A charged phone per player with mobile data, plus a power bank if you plan to stay all day, completes the kit.

Your first riddle stands on the Rambla Nova

Book online with one ticket per player, enter the booking reference from your email in the World City Trail app and walk to the bronze human tower on the Rambla Nova. The first riddle is waiting at its base, beneath the bronze figures standing on one another's shoulders.
