In fact, numerous attempts were made by Florentines over the centuries to repatriate Dante’s body, most notably during the Renaissance when the Medici tried to have him returned. But the Franciscan monks of Ravenna, who had safeguarded the poet’s remains, went so far as to hide them in a secret wall cavity to prevent his exhumation.

It wasn’t until the 19th century that the remains were accidentally rediscovered during restoration work, confirming once and for all that Dante had never left Ravenna. Today, Florence has placed an empty tomb in Santa Croce as a symbolic gesture, but the real resting place remains firmly in Ravenna—a city that honored Dante not with grandeur, but with steadfast respect.
