Bom Jesus do Monte: A Journey of Faith

The history of Bom Jesus do Monte is deeply rooted in the European tradition of creating “Sacri Monti,” or sacred mountains, which emerged during the Counter-Reformation in the 16th century. These sites were designed to offer a symbolic pilgrimage experience for the faithful, recreating a spiritual journey without the need to travel to the Holy Land. The sanctuary at Braga was developed over more than 600 years, with its most iconic features taking shape during the Baroque and Rococo periods.

Why is so unique

The central feature of Bom Jesus is its monumental stairway, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture that zigzags its way up the hillside. This stunning 577-step staircase, made of granite with whitewashed plaster façades, is divided into two distinct sections. The lower part, known as the Staircase of the Five Senses, is an allegorical journey where each level is dedicated to one of the five human senses: Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste, and Touch. Each sense is represented by a unique fountain, with water symbolically emerging from the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth of allegorical statues.

At the end of this journey, a small landing leads to the Staircase of the Three Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity. Each virtue is also represented by an ornate fountain. The ascent is designed to be a profound spiritual experience, symbolizing the purification of the soul as pilgrims climb towards the divine. While many visitors choose to make the climb on foot, tradition encourages pilgrims to ascend the steps on their knees as an act of penance and devotion.

The Architectural and Natural Harmony

At the summit of the stairway stands the majestic Neoclassical basilica, built in the late 18th century. Its clean lines and elegant facade provide a striking contrast to the elaborate Baroque style of the staircase below. The church, consecrated in 1834, houses a notable main altar that depicts the crucifixion of Jesus, a powerful culmination of the journey up the “Way of the Cross.”

Beyond the staircase and basilica, the sanctuary is surrounded by a sprawling, lush park that offers a tranquil escape. The Historic Funicular

Inaugurated in 1882, Bom Jesus do Monte railway is the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula and a rare example of a working water-balanced system. The two cabins are connected by a steel cable, and the descending car is filled with water to make it heavier, using gravity to pull the ascending car up the steep incline. This ingenious and environmentally friendly system has been in operation for over a century, providing an efficient and charming way to reach the sanctuary’s summit while offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
