What is the Rhodes Old Town self-guided walking tour?

The Rhodes Old Town self-guided walking tour works through the walled medieval town at a pace you set, with audio narration on your phone instead of a guide at the front. Allow about 3 hours: only 25 minutes of that is walking, the route measures 1.5 km, and at 12 stops you stand still and listen. Most of the time goes on the stories, not on the distance.

At the d'Amboise Gate the narration opens with the stone bridge over the dry moat and the bending passage built in 1512 to slow attackers down. In the Hospital of the Knights, now the Archaeological Museum, it turns to the Gothic ward where the Order nursed sick pilgrims and to the kneeling Aphrodite inside. Later come the worn relief above the Sea Gate of 1478, the Virgin between John the Baptist and Saint Peter, and the three apses still standing full height in the ruin of Our Lady of the Burgh.

Walk the lanes

Google Maps points the way from one stop to the next: 25 minutes on foot and 1.5 km in all, at a pace you set yourself.

Break off

Sit down in the shade for a cold drink or give an hour to a museum, then pick the walk up again, the same day or another one.

Who the walking tour is for

A first visit to the Old Town

One walk separates the town of the Knights from the Ottoman town and explains what you are standing in front of.

Anyone who avoids groups

No raised umbrella and no roll call: you stay as long as something holds you and move on when you decide to.

Half a day on the island

3 hours covers the walled town, so the rest of the day stays free for a beach or the harbour.

The walk stop by stop: the d'Amboise Gate, the Street of the Knights, Hippocrates Square, the Clock Tower

12 stops · about 25 min walking · start: D'Amboise Gate · finish: Clock Tower

The first stop is the d'Amboise Gate in the north-west walls, reached by the stone bridge over the moat. Saint Anthony's Gate follows, then the Palace of the Grand Master and the Street of the Knights, running down towards the harbour past the Archaeological Museum in the old Hospital of the Knights. The Sea Gate, Hippocrates Square and the ruins of the Church of Our Lady of the Burgh come next, then the Square of the Jewish Martyrs, named in memory of the Jews of Rhodes deported in 1944, and the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque. Sokratous Street climbs to the Mosque of Suleiman, and the Clock Tower ends the walk. Another opening stop or another order is set in the app, and no stop needs an entry ticket.

  1. D'Amboise Gate

    1D'Amboise GateStart

This gate in the north-west of the walls was built in 1512 under Grand Master Emery d'Amboise, and his coat of arms is set above the entrance. You cross the wide dry moat on a stone bridge and follow a bending passage, designed to slow down attackers, towards the Palace of the Grand Master.

  2. Saint Anthony's Gate

    2Saint Anthony's Gate

Saint Anthony's Gate is the inner gate on the way from the d'Amboise Gate to the Palace of the Grand Master. It belongs to the layered defences the Knights of St John built on the landward side, where attackers who broke through the outer gate still faced walls, a narrow passage and another gate.

  3. Palace of the Grand Master

    3Palace of the Grand Master

The Knights of St John built this fortress-palace in the 14th century as the seat of their Grand Master. It was badly damaged by a gunpowder explosion in 1856, and the Italian authorities rebuilt it in the late 1930s, so its medieval look is largely a reconstruction.

  4. Street of the Knights

    4Street of the Knights

This straight cobbled street, about 200 metres long, runs from the Palace down towards the harbour along the line of an ancient road. Here stood the inns of the Order's national groups, the Tongues, and you can still spot coats of arms on façades such as the Inn of France.

  5. Archaeological Museum

    5Archaeological Museum

The museum is housed in the Hospital of the Knights, a large Gothic building of the 15th century with an arcaded courtyard where the Order cared for sick pilgrims. Its best-known exhibit is a Hellenistic marble statue of Aphrodite kneeling as she bathes.

  6. 6Sea Gate

Built in 1478 under Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson, the Sea Gate was the town's main entrance from the commercial harbour, with two round towers flanking an arch once closed by a portcullis. Above the seaward opening a worn relief shows the Virgin between John the Baptist and Saint Peter, over the arms of the Order, of France and of d'Aubusson. Bombing in the Second World War took off the top of the north tower, which was rebuilt in 1951.

  7. Hippocrates Square

    7Hippocrates Square

Hippocrates Square, at the lower end of Sokratous Street, is one of the busiest meeting points in the Old Town. On one side stands the Castellania, built by the Knights in the early 16th century as a commercial court and exchange, with an outside staircase leading to its upper floor.

  8. 8Ruins of the Church of Our Lady of the Burgh

The Knights of St John built this Gothic church in the fourteenth century in the Burgh, the merchants' quarter outside their own walled Collachium. It was a three-aisled basilica roughly 30 metres long and 14 metres wide, with side chapels added along its walls over time. Bombing in the Second World War left it a ruin, and the three apses of its east end still stand to their full height above the lanes around them.

  9. Square of the Jewish Martyrs

    9Square of the Jewish Martyrs

This square lies in the old Jewish quarter, La Juderia, and is named in memory of the Jews of Rhodes deported by the Nazis in 1944, most of whom died in Auschwitz. A memorial stands at one corner, and in the middle of the square a fountain is decorated with bronze seahorses.

  10. Ibrahim Pasha Mosque

    10Ibrahim Pasha Mosque

This mosque dates from the 16th century, soon after the Ottomans took Rhodes in 1522, and is named after Ibrahim Pasha, grand vizier of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. It is one of the oldest mosques in the town, and its slim minaret rises above the surrounding houses.

  11. 11Mosque of Suleiman

The pink-plastered mosque at the top of Sokratous Street is named after Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who took Rhodes from the Knights in 1522. The present building dates from the early 19th century, and its minaret is a landmark of the Old Town skyline.

  12. Clock Tower

    12Clock TowerFinish

The Clock Tower, or Roloi, was built in the mid-19th century during Ottoman rule on the site of an older tower of the fortifications. It stands on one of the highest points of the Old Town, close to the Mosque of Suleiman, and its clock rises above the rooftops.

    Henry (verified owner) –

Logical and well organised walking tour but I missed the historical context. I think the texts could have added a tremendous amount of detail around each of the individual sights and Rhodes in general. This felt like it was aimed at 6th graders and I was looking for the PhD…in short I would pay more for higher quality commentary (and possibly audio?)

Absolutely fantastic! I did this tour solo and didn’t get lost once. Instructions are very clear and thorough. The tour shows you some amazing sites that can be easily missed otherwise. Palace of the grand masters was brilliant and so was the museum. Make sure you go up the stairs to the right of the cafe or you will miss some little gems.

Frequently asked questions

How much time should I set aside for the walk?

Set aside about 3 hours: 25 minutes of walking, a route of 1.5 km and 12 stops. The distance is short and the listening is the long part, so how long you stay anywhere is your own decision, and the walk can be broken off and finished another day.

Which stop is first and which is last?

The d'Amboise Gate opens the walk, on the landward side of the walls, and the Clock Tower closes it. If that falls awkwardly from where you are staying, the app lets you begin at another stop on the route.

Who does the guiding, and when do we start?

The narration does the guiding, so there is nobody to meet and no hour to keep. The reference in your confirmation email unlocks the walk in the World City Trail app, and which day you use it is entirely your choice.

Does any stop need an entry ticket?

None of them. The stories are told in the street, under the gates and in the squares, so all 12 stops are covered without a ticket. Going inside the Palace of the Grand Master or the Archaeological Museum is a separate visit you arrange yourself.

Can we bring children along?

Children are welcome as long as an adult walks with them. The stops are short, the bending passage behind the gate and the coats of arms on the Street of the Knights hold their attention, and the audio can be stopped at any moment. Wheelchairs cannot manage these cobbles, and a buggy makes the walk hard work.

In which languages is the narration available?

The narration and the on-screen text of the walk come in seven languages: English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Greek.

Can a family or a group of friends walk it together?

They can. Everyone needs a ticket of their own so that each person listens on their own phone, and up to 5 people walk comfortably together. Larger groups split up along the same route.

Can I add the Rhodes city guides?

You can, in the same booking box: six interactive guides to Rhodes, covering food, things to do, family outings, nights out, day trips and travelling on a budget. Take one of them or all six, and they are delivered together with your tickets. They work offline, so the walk tells you what you are looking at while the guides take care of the rest of the day.

Do I need anything besides my phone?

A charged phone with mobile data above all, then earphones for the narration, a power bank if your battery is weak, water and a hat in the warm months, and shoes with grip for 1.5 km of worn cobbles. Google Maps handles the way between stops.

Rhodes at your own speed

Your booking reference lands in your inbox as soon as you book, and after that it takes only earphones at the d'Amboise Gate, on whichever morning you pick. In the same booking box you can add the Rhodes city guides, one of them or all six, and build the rest of the day around the walk.
