Knights, sultans and seahorses: the Old Town of Rhodes as a riddle trail

The Rhodes treasure hunt is a self-guided city game you play on your phone: you walk through the medieval Old Town, solve a riddle at each landmark by looking closely at what is in front of you, and unlock the stories and legends behind it. Inside the walls everything is close together: the 10 stops are linked by just 2 km, around 30 minutes on foot, so most of the roughly 2 hours goes on riddles, stories and a pause in the shade, and the start time is up to you.

Highlights include the d'Amboise Gate, the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights, Hippocrates Square, the Square of the Jewish Martyrs, the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque and the Mosque of Suleiman. The Old Town is compact and largely car-free, so short walks take you from the Knights' fortress to Ottoman mosques and the old Jewish quarter.

What you do between the d'Amboise Gate and the Clock Tower

Coats of arms, gateways and a fountain of seahorses

Each of the 10 stops hides one riddle, and the answer is always in plain sight: the arms of Emery d'Amboise above his gate, the shields on the Inn of France, the outside staircase of the Castellania, the bronze seahorses in the Square of the Jewish Martyrs. You need no history lessons beforehand, just sharp eyes.

Stories of the Knights and the Ottomans

Each answer opens a chapter of the town's past: why the Grand Master's palace you see is largely an Italian reconstruction of the 1930s after the gunpowder explosion of 1856, how the Knights nursed pilgrims in the hospital that now holds the museum, and what changed after Suleiman the Magnificent took Rhodes in 1522. If reading in the midday sun feels like too much, the audio narration reads the stories to you.

2 km of lanes inside the walls

On foot you cover about half an hour in all, from the dry moat at the d'Amboise Gate down to Sokratous Street and up again to the Clock Tower, one of the highest points of the Old Town. Google Maps shows the way through a maze of lanes where it is easy to lose your bearings.

Shade, a cold drink and a break

No clock runs against you, so sit down at a café on Hippocrates Square, browse the shops of Sokratous Street with the tips in the app and carry on later or the next morning. In July and August an early start or a late afternoon keeps the heat bearable.

Cruise ships moor in the harbour right beside the walls, and in about 2 hours the game takes you from the Knights' gates to the Ottoman mosques with no group to keep up with. If you need to be back on board sooner, you simply stop wherever you are.

Families on a beach holiday

A cooler morning or evening in the Old Town makes a good change from the beach. Children like crossing the moat, counting the coats of arms on the Street of the Knights and finding the seahorses on the fountain, and an adult plays in every team.

Rhodians with friends to show around

People who pass these walls every day often discover details they had never noticed, and visiting friends take home the stories as well as the photos. Teams of up to 5 each play on their own phones, and the game works just as well for a company outing.

  • No entry tickets needed: everything happens outside the buildings. Going inside is optional and paid separately.

The hunt starts at the d'Amboise Gate, passes through Saint Anthony's Gate to the Palace of the Grand Master and leads down the Street of the Knights to the Archaeological Museum. You then cross into the lower town to Hippocrates Square, the Square of the Jewish Martyrs and the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque, before climbing to the Mosque of Suleiman and finishing at the Clock Tower. None of the riddles asks you to step inside a building, so no entry ticket is involved anywhere along the way, and if you come in through a different gate, the app lets you open the game at another stop and rearranges the rest.

    The Knights of St John built this fortress-palace in the 14th century as the seat of their Grand Master. It was badly damaged by a gunpowder explosion in 1856, and the Italian authorities rebuilt it in the late 1930s, so its medieval look is largely a reconstruction.

    The self guided treasure hunt was very entertaining, and took us on a journey through the old town of Rhodes. It gave us a tour, telling us about the relevance of different landmarks, and the clues were intertwined into the history nicely. It was great that you could do it at your own pace, and pause whenever you wished. We were sorry when it ended, and would definitely do another one of these in another place!

The only point of critique I have is that for 2 questions the answers where really vague. One answer was faded away and turned unreadable and the second one made no sense, even with the hints. Nevertheless I still loved it; the tour showed me some real hidden gems and pushed me to talk to some strangers as well which was surprisingly nice!

    Nice puzzles! Most of the answers are easy to answer with inscriptions on site or through logical thinking, but with others you have to think a little before you come up with the solution. The so-called “optimized route” definitely needs improvement in the last three stations and it is advisable to look at the Google Maps map to choose the next point sensibly. All in all a nice tour that covers most of the important sights in Rhodes Town and provides nice background information and stories. But not necessarily worth the price of €13 for the 1.5 hour walk.

    The internet signal was not great, even though we have free roaming mobile data, we couldn’t do two of the 10 locations properly as it kept dropping out of two different network providers. That isn’t the app’s fault,but it is something to take into consideration, We nearly gave up as it was getting frustrating, but we went to a bar to people watch rehydrate and reconnected. We found it a clever way to sight see. But when trying to get a signal it was frustrating and distracting from the enjoyment. Also be mindful some clues maybe hidden by tourist stalls.. We will definitely be doing more of these activities it was fun.

    Disappointed that although my husband and I had logged into the same trail we had different clues for one of the destinations – I had a secret destination and he didn’t. Also the clue with the Latin phrase was incorrect as GENESIS – and very difficult to see the last letters on the stone (even taking a photo and zooming). Also very hard to look at picture clues which were rotated- especially the jigsaw clue. The last clue showed a picture which was not representative of the actual statues on the gate and was misleading.

    Schöne Rätsel! Die meisten Antworten sind mit Inschriften vor Ort oder durch logisches Denken recht einfach zu beantworten, bei anderen muss man doch ein wenig überlegen bis man den Lösungsansatz hat. Die sogenannte “optimierte Route” hat bei den letzten 3 Stationen durchaus Verbesserungsbedarf und es empfiehlt sich die Google Maps Karte anzuschauen um den nächsten Punkt sinnvoll zu wählen. Alles im allen eine schöne Tour, die die meisten wichtigen Sehenswürdigkeiten in Rhodos Stadt abklappert und schöne Hintergrundinformationen und Geschichten liefert. Den Preis von 13€ aber für die 1.5h nicht umbedingt wert.

    This self guided walking tour had lots of information for those who want to know absolutely everything. The clues were sometimes difficult to understand, but we eventually got the hang of it and it became a competition to see who could resolve the clue first.     The scavenger hunt was really fun. The stories were interesting and informative. Some riddles were easy, some others were more difficult and you had to think out of the box.If you struggle to find the answer, use the hints which will lead you. Due to the format, we had the freedom to stroll on our own, take pictures and eat ice-cream. No pressure or time limit. All in all, a fun experience to learn more about the Old Town.

    Eine spannende kleine Schatzsuche durch die OldTown von Rhodos. Manche Rätsel waren knifflig was für Rätselfreunde ja gut ist. Genial war das wir die ganze Zeit an der frischen Luft waren und das Spiel jederzeit pausieren konnten um einen Cafe und ein leckeres Mittagessen über den Dächern von Rhodos geniessen zu können. Auf jeden Fall für Rätselfreunde sehr zu empfehlen.

Is a morning enough for the treasure hunt in Rhodes Old Town?

Yes, it takes about 2 hours. The 10 stops are only 2 km apart in total, roughly 30 minutes of walking, and the rest of the time goes on the riddles and on stories of the Knights, the Ottoman town and La Juderia, the old Jewish quarter. You can stop at any point and finish later that day or on another day.

Which gate do we go in by, and where is the last riddle?

You go in through the d'Amboise Gate in the north-west of the walls, reached on a stone bridge over the dry moat, close to the Palace of the Grand Master. The last riddle waits at the Clock Tower beside the Mosque of Suleiman, at the top of Sokratous Street. Coming from the harbour or the new town? In the app you can begin at another stop.

Is a guide waiting at the d'Amboise Gate, or is there a fixed starting time?

No one waits for you at the gate, and no hour is fixed in advance. After booking online you receive a booking reference by email, enter it in the World City Trail app and set off on the day and at the hour you choose, ideally early in the morning or towards evening when it is cooler. Tickets are per player, and the riddles about Knights and sultans appear on every phone in the team.

Do we need tickets for the Palace of the Grand Master or the museum?

Not for the game: the riddles are read from walls, gateways and squares, never from inside a building. The Palace of the Grand Master and the Archaeological Museum in the Hospital of the Knights both charge admission, so if you want to see inside, plan a separate visit before or after the hunt.

What will children enjoy inside the walls?

Quite a lot, as long as an adult plays in their team. They tend to love crossing the moat at the d'Amboise Gate, spotting the coats of arms along the Street of the Knights and hunting for the bronze seahorses on the fountain in the Square of the Jewish Martyrs. The pebbled lanes and stone steps rule out wheelchairs, and a pushchair will bump its way round.

Are the Rhodes riddles available in Polish and Greek?

Yes, in both, and also in English, German, French, Italian and Dutch, seven languages in all. The language is set separately on each phone in the World City Trail app, so a Greek-English couple can play together with each of them reading the riddles in their own language.

Does the Old Town work for a company team event?

It does: colleagues each need a ticket, form teams of no more than 5 and follow the same route, with as many teams as the group requires. The Clock Tower makes an easy meeting point at the end, with the cafés of Sokratous Street a few steps further down.

What do we need for a summer day inside the walls?

A charged smartphone with mobile data, ideally a power bank, and shoes that grip well on polished stones and steps. From May to October add a hat, sunscreen and water, as the lanes inside the walls get hot around midday.
