The name “Kawaiahaʻo” is derived from sacred waters once used by Hawaiian chiefs, symbolizing its deep ties to Hawaiian royalty and history.

Before the church was built, the site was home to a thatched hale pili (traditional Hawaiian structure) used for Christian services following the arrival of missionaries in 1820. As Christianity took root in the islands, a more permanent structure was needed, and Kawaiahaʻo was constructed using over 14,000 blocks of hand-quarried coral, painstakingly harvested from the ocean by native Hawaiian laborers and divers.

An Architectural Masterpiece

Unlike traditional Hawaiian buildings, Kawaiahaʻo Church reflects the New England Congregationalist style, brought to Hawaiʻi by the missionaries. The most striking feature is its coral stone walls, sourced from reefs off the coast of Oʻahu.
