Yes, if you head straight into town. Smaller ships berth at Leith; large ships anchor off Newhaven or South Queensferry and tender passengers ashore. From Leith or Newhaven the tram reaches Princes Street in roughly 25 minutes; from South Queensferry, walk up to Dalmeny station and take the train to Edinburgh Waverley, about 20 minutes. Both bring you near the Scott Monument, where our hunt starts. The hunt takes about 3 hours and ends on Calton Hill, so it fits a normal port day.

Price range: 4.49 € through 16.99 €From Leith, Newhaven or South Queensferry to the Scott Monument
- Check where your ship calls. Leith Cruise Terminal, next to Ocean Terminal, takes ships up to about 220 m and is about 5 km from the centre. Larger ships tender to Newhaven Harbour (about 15 minutes) or to Hawes Pier in South Queensferry (about 15-20 minutes).
- From Leith or Newhaven: take Edinburgh Trams from the Ocean Terminal or Newhaven stop towards the city centre and get off at Princes Street or St Andrew Square, roughly 25 minutes. Newhaven tram stop is about 5 minutes' walk from the harbour. Lothian Buses from Ocean Terminal take about 20-25 minutes, and a taxi from Leith about 15-20 minutes.
- From South Queensferry: walk about 10 minutes uphill, with steps, from Hawes Pier to Dalmeny station and take the ScotRail train to Edinburgh Waverley, about 20 minutes with around 4 trains per hour. The Cruiselink X99 bus runs on cruise days from near Hawes Pier to the centre in about 30 minutes.
- From Rosyth: there is no public transport at the terminal, so take a taxi to Inverkeithing station and the train to Waverley, about 30 minutes.
- The Scott Monument stands in East Princes Street Gardens next to Waverley station. Open the World City Trail app there, enter your booking reference and start.

Tips for Edinburgh when time is short
- The route climbs to the Castle Esplanade and later up Calton Hill, so expect steep slopes and steps.
- From South Queensferry, the walk from Hawes Pier up to Dalmeny station is uphill with steps.
- If you tendered at South Queensferry, allow 45-60 minutes to get back to the ship from central Edinburgh, plus the tender queue.
- Return tender queues can be long, so do not head back at the last minute.
- Taxis wait at the ports on cruise days but can be scarce at South Queensferry on busy days.
- Edinburgh weather changes quickly, so bring a rain layer even if the morning is dry.
Why a self-guided game works on a port day
- You start when you step off the ship, not at a fixed tour time, and nobody waits for a group.
- Everyone in your party can follow on their own phone with one booking reference.
- You can stop for lunch or a swim and carry on later, and end the game whenever you need to head back.
- Google Maps guides you from stop to stop, and the game needs no entry tickets.
Edinburgh cruise stop: questions
Where do cruise ships dock for Edinburgh?
Smaller ships berth at Leith; large ships anchor off Newhaven or South Queensferry and tender passengers ashore. Some ships use Rosyth across the Forth.
How do I get from South Queensferry to Edinburgh?
Walk about 10 minutes uphill from Hawes Pier to Dalmeny station and take the train to Edinburgh Waverley, about 20 minutes, or use the Cruiselink X99 bus, about 30 minutes.
Is there a tram from the Leith or Newhaven cruise area?
Yes. Edinburgh Trams stop at Ocean Terminal and Newhaven and reach the city centre in roughly 25 minutes.
How far is Calton Hill from the station for the trip back?
Calton Hill, where the hunt ends, is about 10 minutes' walk from Waverley station and the tram stops.
Do I need to book a time slot?
No. You book online, receive your booking reference by email straight away and start whenever you are ashore. The ticket has no time limit, so it still works if your ship arrives late or your plans change.
What do we need on the day?
A charged smartphone with mobile data, the World City Trail app from the App Store or Google Play, and your booking reference. A power bank helps on a long port day.
Port and transport details checked in November 2026. Docking positions and timetables change, so always check your ship’s all-aboard time and your cruise line’s port information before you set off.
